A seemingly simple request

I have two Vista computers (32 bit) in my house. They are connected through a wireless network set to private, with file sharing and network discovery and no passwords required.

Both users are set to administrator with no password required.

What I want is permission to transfer files or folders between the C drives of both machines.

I get as far as seeing these drives when I click on the computer's network location but then cannot gain access to the drive itself.

I feel as if I'm close. I've trying playing with the permissions on both C drives and it looks like I've set everything I can.

Any ideas?

Yes, you share it, pick a name for it too. The drives show up with my selected name when you network to the machine (along with the public folder and printers, etc) but when I click on it, access denied.

You need to have a common user on both computers with same password. Then, you log into one computer. You can also use administrative shares

\\computername\c$ for administrative share of drive c:

You permissions need to be tweaked. Shared is one thing, having permission to access and make changes are another.

Right click the file your having trouble accessing and select the security tab. Either add the user you want to have full access or simply add everyone. Thene give them full access.

Your done.

And in the network and sharing center be sure to diable "password protected shareing" its a PITA! And in your situation I doubt you need it.

SCSIraidGURU seems to have misunderstood your problem. Common(or like) users an both systems will cause shareing problems. And passwords are for security to prevent access not to give it. The over use of passwords will simply complicate your system.

Use it to protect your Vista log in, and any files you dont want to share. Thats it!

You mentioned file, so does this have to be done on a file by file basis or can an entire drive be made available?

It seems like "everyone" was one of the settings I saw while adjusting permissions on the c drive.

One of the computers is a laptop which I have with me now at work. Here are the settings:

Local c properties, sharing tab, shared is set, advanced sharing, check box is checked, should I be checking permissions here?

Then there's the security tab on local c properties, what should these look like? On the list there's authenticated users (no permissions set at all), SYSTEM (all checked allow), administrators (all checked allow) and Users (only read & execute, list read are allowed)
