Alright well right now I am not sure as to where this thread goes but I am going to place it here for now. Now I recently got internet and I think the speed is 2.1mb I know it is not much but it is enough to run xbox live or computer gaming I think, But I have a pesky step sister who refuses to stop download movies and tv series, and I have confronted her with it but it does not work at all, now I have a router and I have been looking around relentlessly trying to figure out how to either block her from certain sites put a certain bandwidth on her computer but I just can't seem to find it.

My router is a Belkin N150 I have pulled up the router config and there is nothing I can visually see that will do any of what I need, it does not have parental controls or block specific sites, I don't want to block her from complete access just from that because it lags me not only on my computer but I can't even play xbox live its frustrating so I ask you for your help community.

Unplug her computer from the router, as far as I know, all wired connections to the router are accepted, only wireless ones can be blocked.

She is connected wireless, (laptop) so I can't really unplug anything the only thing wired is my xbox live.

I think you may be able to set a Username and Password to connect to your router. That will block her computer if she doesn't have the login for it. This can always be disabled as well, so if you're gaming you could turn it on and block her off, then restore it when you're done.

Well as I said I don't want to cut her off completely, because things would get bad.

There are several ways around this.
First, ask your Step-sister to please use the Scheduler function on her torrent client. Ask her to set it up so that it limits the download speed when you are using your computer and then downloads at normal speed when your not using the computer.
If she does not comply tell her you will have no choice but to tell your parents that she is being unfair with the use of the internet. Don't get angry or show emotion to either your parents or Step-sister except for sincerity. You are entitled to your fair share of the internet and if your Step-sister is going to hog it how can you reasonably become well balanced child if there is no fairness at home!

If all else fails cut her off all together. If you can't use it neither should she!

P.S. By the way she is likely to be doing something illegal so your parents won't be too happy about that, as your parents would be liable in any court proceedings, and then that would make her life a misery...:eek:

If she's using torrents or a file sharing app to download and isn't all that savvy (ie won't go through app settings etc) you could always adjust the download/upload speed limit in her torrent / p2p client.

Or, adjust her global connection settings to limit the amount of connections she makes which will limit the saturation hit you get.


To block her from downloading completely, set the client she uses to a single port, disable things like DHT, Peer Exchange etc and don't port forward it it in the router (allow the number you created)


Install a bandwidth limiter app like Netlimiter on her PC/Laptop and cap the allowed download speeds for her apps. (I can't think of any freeware ones off the top of my head)

If she's savvy or not using torrents/p2p clients though... you'll have trouble as those options are all configurable on her side, not yours and only a bandwith limiter app will impact http:// FTP:// downloads.
