Solved A little help. please?

I just installed a zip file called "take ownership" it deposits itself in the registry and allows you to take control of certain files. So, I completely removed most of the gadgets that came installed with the vista sidebar. All but one for some reason the Norton status gadget will not allow me to get rid of it. Is there a way to completely remove this gadget? Also if I completely remove the sidebar will it cause problems for my OS?

It will not hurt anything at all to turn off the Windows Sidebar if you wanted to.

Hi samhain,

The sidebar can be a startup oaf. Makes sense to take it out of startup.

Removing it completely is different - you may be able to take ownership of the folder and delete it, but you could get issues as it is an installed program.

You may find you get away with it. Keep a copy of the sidebar folder in case you need to put it back.

I removed a lot of stuff from mine , but I did it by editing the installation files, and burning a new install dvd - then reinstalling from that.

Unless you really need the hard drive space, I would recommend to just turn off and remove (uncheck) the Windows Sidebar from startup instead.

OK, thanks again, Shawn. I have more than enough hard drive space, I just really hate the sidebar! I was worried that if I just cast it to the recycle bin my computer would cease to function. And I don't really want that. DO you have any insight on removing the norton gadget. I tried the whole command prompt to try to take ownership and then to delete it but I get the message "you need permission to perfom this action" the norton gadget is the last remaining gadget. Is it tied into the norton software?

I would remove Norton altogether...there are better and some Free alternatives out there.
You and your system will both be happier.
Post back if you decide to go this path...it's a bit of a chore to do properly.

If you did not plan on using Windows Sidebar, then turning it off and unchecking the box to not have it run at the startup of Vista will turn off the Norton gadget as well.

I just found a program called unlocker, it did the trick. Now all of the stupid gadgets that came with the sidebar have been removed and deleted. I also used the sidebar disabler application. As I have said I really want to just get rid of the sidebar not just turn it off, but to have it disabled works. SO, thanks for your input, it was greatly appreciated.
