64-bit DVD Question

Bare Foot Kid

R.I.P. August 13th 2014
Hello!

Let me get this straight, you're saying that because I have an OEM built machine
(HP) with a valid product key from the manufacturer that I can contact MS
and get a 64-bit DVD, even though no disc of any kind came packaged with this machine?

This came pre-installed with 32-bit Home Premium, so they will send
me a 64-bit Home Premium DVD for the cost of S&H?

I didn't want to continue this in someone else's topic --> http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/172519-vista-x64-sp1-media-2.html#post800357

You can get a OEM upgrade code from Microsoft to upgrade your version of Vista. You can't go from 32-bit to 64-bit with it. You have to reinstall.

Windows Vista: Compare editions

Check out upgrade now.

@Guru, I know I would have to do a clean install; that would be no problem.
The 'problem' is I have no disc to install with.

Thanks  Ted

You can upgrade from one Vista to another version directly from Microsoft.

Ultimate comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit. The other versions don't. You need to call Microsoft to order a media kit and license.

Thanks for your help, but I want 64-bit ... :o

I also want to keep this HDD the way it is.
That is why I want to get another HDD and install 64-bit Ultimate on that.
That way my significant other (read NOT computer savvy) can still have
something to play with and I will have x64 to 'play' with.
Then if/when I ever get around to building a machine I will be able to move
that HDD to the new machine. As that piece above states; I want it all!
Thanks for all your trouble!

Then, you need a second full version of Vista to dual boot.

In that situation you would be dual booting, if you later shifted the drive that held the Vista 64 to a new computer, it would probably have a different motherboard, okay there is a workround for that. But the boot for the Windows XP 64 drive would still be on the original first drive, would it not? so how would you get around around that problem?

Hello Adrian.

I'm not referring to XP. What I meant was to have one HDD (this one) with the
original OEM 32-bit Home Premium to be left intact. No dual boot on this HDD.

Then to purchase a second (10K RPM) HDD and install 64-bit Ultimate "Retail"
onto that. Then I could use the BIOS to boot into one or the other.
Yes, I'm aware that I would have to re-activate the OS with MS if I were to
move it to another MoBo, that's why I want 64-bit Ultimate "Retail" instead of "OEM".
