54mps faster than 300mps??????

hey guys just noticed.
on my compaq laptop i have wireless "G" on my compaq desktop i have wired "N1"
so laptop speed is 54mps desktops is 100mps i downloaded an appplication on my laptop download speed was max 450kbps i downloaded an application (same one) on my desktop piddly 87kbs and the desktop is supposed to be way faster
also why are all wired coonection on status bar in vist maximum 100mps but wireless they go up to 150mps?

First of all, as long as your connection from the router to your PC is equal to, or greater than, the theoretical maximum speed as provided by your ISP then you should have nothing to worry about. Where these faster connections come into their own is with networking.

As regards the download speeds on your laptop and desktop being widely different, there are a number of factors. Firstly, you might just have got a slow link to the file in question when you downloaded it to your desktop. Secondly, the position of the receiving antenna for your wireless connection. With a laptop, there are usually 2 located at either edge of the screen. If the wireless card in your desktop includes a built-in antenna, then the metalwork of the base unit itself could be severely degrading the signal. If that is the case, try and see if you can obtain an extension cable for the antenna and see if that makes any difference.

The maximum speed for a wired connection is governed by the slowest device in the chain. If your motherboard only has a 100Mb interface, then that is the fastest that you will be able to go. The same, incidentally, also applies to your wireless connection.

butmy desktop is wired not wireless so the antenas cant beinterferibg what im means is if wire laptop speed is 54mps, and my desktop motherbpard is 100mps shouldnt the download speed on the desktop be 2x faster downloading than the laptop because it has a higher speed

i completley unnderstand what your saying but what i mean,
is that is my router giving my laptop prioroty or is it some mystery that the download speeds would be a dramatic diffrence?

the laptop should be faster wireless then the wired connection as the wire has a max speed as well. take a look at the wire to see what it is. some is 10 mps some is 100mps. so it could well be your wire slowing it down. new high speed wire could help the problem. it could also be your hard drive load speed or ram. lots of little things that can effect the over all process.
i have dial up threw my desktop then to a wireless router to send it to my laptop, so clearly my desktop should load faster as it gets the net them has to send it by wire to the router then it gets transmitted to my laptop. but my laptop downloads easily 2X faster then my desktop ????? all i can figure is it has to do with my laptop having faster ram and hard drive speeds to process it as it comes in. so it may well not be a question of downloading speed but rather the speed the computer can accept and process the info.
or it could just be your cable speed ( by cable speed i mean the cat5 or whatever you are using) take a look at every thing involved and see if you can find a limiting factor??

Without knowing anything more about your systems or network, I can only take a rough guess...

But I would guess that your PC is dang slow. Perhaps you have some firewall or antivirus app slowing it down? Perhaps it's just an ancient machine on its last legs?

One thing it should NOT be is "cable speed," as noted above. I say this because even if your ethernet adapter was running at 10mbit, it doesn't look like your internet connection is anywhere near to maxing that out. HOWEVER: if you have a damaged cable, or if you have it all tied up in knots, you can have collisions. And that'll slow you down to a crawl real fast, irregardless of what speed your ethernet adapter is running at. Ethernet cables are sometimes fragile, and a shallow cut or tight bend in the cable can cause all manner of headaches.

thks for info but my desktop is not that slow i spend many hours making it faster and removing tweaking and defraging the thing it runs neraly as fast as my laptop
it should actualy be fster if the laptops a buo intel 1.83Ghz and the desktop is 2.20Ghz so should the desktop not be faster?

Just because it has a faster CPU doesn't necessarily mean that it is going to be faster on the network; a slow software firewall could cause your connection to slow to a crawl.

Perhaps if you try disabling any and all software firewalls...?

Otherwise, have you tried another CAT cable and/or ethernet card?

has CAT5 cable enthernet card what for.but any way i downloaded a wifi manager now it performs at 250-500kbps but ii still think it should do that without the download manager/accelerator
