2 Problems when computer goes to sleep

The 1st problem is everytime I close my lid/turn off the power/click the sleep button to put my computer to sleep before I go to sleep myself at night, I always wake up and my computer is at the log in screen, but it has restarted without any settings I'm aware of making it restart. I then log into my computer and it says that "windows has recovered from an error causing it to shutdown" etc etc.

Then 2nd problem is whenever my computer does come back from sleep, which it does if it hasn't been asleep long, or whenever it is restarted in general...my monitor settings from my dual monitors changes. I have to go back into the properties tab and change it so I can drag my mouse from the left screen across to the right, and change which monitor is my main monitor. Sometimes my recycle bin icon even goes back to a different spot on the monitor.

I am so confused, any and all advice are much appreciated. Thanks!

Update:

So I learned w/ Nvidia you are supposed to adjust display setting through the control panel because it "fights" w/ Vista's Display settings. Well, I am still having problems with it coming out right. And, when I change the settings in Nvidia, my main screen will black out (Laptop or Main depending on which I make my main screen), and I have to restart my computer only to still only see my little monitor screen as my main screen...which is not what I want. Ahhh.

What are your full system specs (especially O/S, graphic card & drivers)? And if you have Vista installed, have you updated hotfixes and/or installed SP1?

I recall hearing quite a few horror stories related to the "Sleep" function in Vista (although I can't recall if it was a problem with ATi/nVidia or Vista itself; will research more)..so perhaps you are a victim of this.

Let us know.

Edit: Just as I posted, you had posted some info. :) I'll do some research for you.

Hey ap0calypse,

Try this Tutorial and let me know if you have some luck getting sleep mode working... http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63567-power-options-sleep-mode-problems.html?ltr=P

Windows Vista, fresh install w/ (I'm assuming) all new updates because it went crazy with auto updates when I started it up. I haven't manually installed any sort of updates, and Asus has an autoinstaller for bios/drivers I believe.

My graphics card is the GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB.

I looked through this tutorial earlier, and I couldn't really pick out what I actually needed to do. I doubt I have to adjust Bios and registry to simply keep my computer from restarting through a Windows error everytime I put it to sleep at night. On a side note, if it goes to sleep and I am in the area within a certain amount of time it comes awake perfectly fine, it is when it is asleep for a given amount of time

Sorry for the delay in response. :) I also hope that you're still checking in, ap0calypse.

From my research so far, it seems the problem is either linked with nVidia's drivers or Power Saving Settings in your BIOS.

But considering that nVidia's drivers have been updated and tweaked since their problem initially was discovered, alot of sites refer to ACPI settings (in the BIOS) being set to "S3 and S1 Disabled".

It's been recommended as a (potential) fix to set it to "S1" (this, apparently isn't as effective in power saving, but should help).

Contradicting opinion, though, is they say to set it to "S3"...so you just need to test and experiment.

As far as I know, S1 allows for "Sleep" and "Hybernate" (which consequently leads to problems..as you've been experiencing). S3 only allows "Sleep" but 'supposidely' fixes any issues (especially if you install SP1). So i'd recommend testing.

Also, ensure you're using the latest nVidia drivers, chipset drivers and (optionally) update your BIOS if available.

As for the resolution changes....I've not come across an appropriate fix for that (i'm not sure if this is a Vista or an nVidia issue)

Umm...what else?...that's all i've managed to find. Hope this helps.

Finally, go to 'Start', right-click on 'Computer', select 'Properties', go into 'Device Manager', 'Network Adapters' amd double-click on your DSL (or alternate device) and click 'Properties'. Click on the 'Power Management' tab and disable any settings to do with "Allow this device to wake the computer".
