Solved 2 external montors to a laptop?

Hi all,
I'm have two HP w2207h monitors connected to my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. To do my school work on this year. I have them connected through a Video-Audio Splitter 2 port. It connects from my laptop to the splitter & then out to each monitor. Works great!
But, how do I get Windows Vista Business to know that there are 2 external monitors?
I want each external monitor to be able to display different sections of my laptop. For example monitor #1 should show my graphic software program (Maya 2011) while the other monitor #2 I need to be able to see my class video on.
My laptop can show a 3rd screen all together or one of the above is fine?
Right now it shows that both external monitors are the exact same. While the laptop is different
Anyone know how (step-by-step) to instruct me how to set this up?
Thanks for your help,
BJ

Unfortunately you cannot, as it's going to a splitter, you will get the same picture multiplied, you would need to get an external graphics card to do what you want, or a wireless device that supports multiple monitors (iPad with air display?)

I really am confused about what youre computer is outputing.

Normally a laptop only can put out to 2 monitors, including the screen. Googling alittle, i think you've got a 2 screen splitter.

If you want to use 3 screens all different, you can use one of theses:
EVGA | Products

its basically a usb video card and supports Aero.

OK,
So let me see if i get this right.
If i use the EVGA-product than i will not need the splitter at all. One monitor will come from the VGA-plug & another from a USB coverter to the 2nd monitor?
That's all i will need to show two different screens from my laptop. But, what will the laptop screen show? a third screen or one of the other two?
I went to Best-Buy and the splitter is what they said i needed.
All i really want is the two external monitors to show like this: 1st monitor my class videos. The 2nd monitor i want to be able to work on the Maya software on the project.
My laptop can show what ever.
Thanks for your help,
BJ
