Brink has suggested great anti virus, anti malware software. There is other software, however. My personal choice is the free Microsoft Security Essentials and the Free Malwarebytes for free scanning back up for malware

One feature of Security Essentials that cannot be claimed by Avast is that Security Essentials is made only for Windows, unlike Avast, one size fits all. Good luck. Whichever you choose you will be happy with the results.

AVG is good, as is superantispyware, but it is a bit of a pain sometimes

I thought AGV was good a while ago but not as good now.
In fact last test results I saw put Avira AntiVir on top
I still go with Richard though.
Super AntiSpyware mainly gets cookies that you can get rid of with CCleaner

I think I'll weasel my way in and add my two cents to the above .......
Though I have been sold on Avast for quite a few years, I do like MSE and have it installed on my machines with smaller HDD's due to it's lightweight footprint.
AVG poses to have way too many False Positives as far as I am concerned, though many dote over it. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it.
Avira is good, though I have had the darnedest time in the past trying to remove it from one OP's system who decided to change AV's, and found that many other Avira users had the same problem.
In the end, it doesn't really matter which AV is installed. None are 100% percent effective. The prevention of infection starts with the user of the computer. Practice safe surfing techniques and you will never get infected.

I use Revo Uninstaller for all but Norton, use their tool for that then manually scan registry, I get really surprised at how much rubbish is left behind on the average program removal.

I have used Avira, AVG and Avast, all three delay the network connection, now I have MSE and seems to work fine and without any long delays.
EDIT: I have tried Avast without installing any Tools and additional SW from them and works perfectly.
