I am using MSE and MailWarebytes, do you think it would be O.K. to install Windows defender too?...I'm sure your answer will be in the positive, since I can run auto scan, or select when (Time) on the windows apps....

The reason I'm asking is because My machine has been quite slow in loading up different sites or when I use any search engine, once I'm at the site the traveling is fast.:confused: I don't now if this question belongs here, but as long as I have the Doctor's ear, I might as well talk about the whole landscape...:D

Also, my webroot is about to expire (about a week away), do you think I should clean that up now? I'm kinda' afraid that the vendor might give me a little "gift" to encourage me to re-up....Sorry for being cynical..:sarc:

Speaking of such I had a very small pop-up remnant of Pareto logic. I chatted with them and they said they would e-mail me instructions on how to remove it...About 2 minutes later my machine looked like a 5 alarm fire!! I swept everything and MSE came up with a mailware warning and quarantined it!! So last night at work I opened up the e-mail they sent me....The message said I would have to completely install the product then remove the whole thing! I have not acted on this little nuisance yet. It is not listed in my control panel under install/uninstall programs...anyway this pareto logic thingy is just a very small nuisance anyway...

Well thats about it for now...

MSE and Windows Defender uses the same Engine. You just need either one of them. You could use Windows Defender just run a manual scan. MSE and Malwarebtyes are good configuration.

Thanks, Richard. I'd seen this one in the threads, but never did anything about it. Seeing you post it special like this got me there and I've downloaded it and it's scanning as we speak. I haven't checked the options yet, but I have it on auto-update. As far as scheduling scans, I guess that depends on the scan timing options available - it seems to me this should only be required periodically (maybe monthly) if all the other programs are being properly updated. If I can't find an option I like, I'll just do it in Task Scheduler.

Thanks, again. I notice now that it's in free software from richc46, but didn't have time then to check it out at that time and then forgot - and the extra explanation here helped me to do it now while I was thinking about it.

Too bad there isn't a free option similar to this for drivers (that isn't a scam to get you to buy drivers from them) - I understand you typically use dates to ID obsolete drivers, but some are still valid - at least that was mostly the case for me when you checked mine - and others hard to find - something like this for drivers would be just great). I might even pay money for it (if it was real and not a scam).

Hello Rich -

I recently installed Secunia (per Jacee's instruction) - once downloaded ran beautifully and cleaned up everything. Untill now, I had no idea first, that these items didn't update themselves, second how dangerous it can be if they are not. Based on previous posts, it sounds like this fills in a gap for outdated drivers (and apparently more)? The write up stated "without having to be a computer expert" which eased a little anxiety - that's for me!

Is there anything I should be aware of before downloading - I've never done some much downloading as I have in the past week (which felt like months!) So far so good on the Vista's performance (it is like new), but giving that a little time (hoping we get a clean bill).

How dangerous?
Lets keep it in perspective. Its the computer so it will not affect your health or happiness but then again it can cause problems that require a reinstall
Without the proper updates, you can get malware, virus/rootkits.
These can be bad enough that a reinstall is required. The computer should not be harmed.
When it comes to downloading, make a system restore point first, so you can easily delete if not wanted or needed.
Then always, always, but always only download from sites that you are sure do noth have a virus surprise for you.
If you can download first to a Cd and then test for virus.

Believe me when I say, I would not be downloading anything without checking it out here first (or on SF for the new computer when I can get logged in)!

I have been compiling a list of the procedures provided me here for maintenance etc, as I know time can pass quickly if I don't get in the practice of doing them. Previously I had thought System Restore was something created for me for protection, now I see it is something I create for protection.

Thank you for the idea about downloading to a cd first, then scanning - I had not thought about that option.

I do - it is the life-line to my business (& if the computer causes me too much trouble, it could indeed impact my health & happiness!)

I am proceeding cautiously but also do not want that to cripple me. I had trouble with two of the links in downloading Secunia (and actually with the ComboFix until Richard pointed me in the right direction on that), that is why I asked about this one. With every process that doesn't 'go as planned', I cannot help but wonder (while Jacee has me monitoring it) if it is a symptom of the virus or just plain 'stuff happens'.

If you don't mind - I have had trouble getting my validation e-mail from SF. I have also tried the link to have the Administrator review and still nothing (I received the password e-mail - so I don't think e-mail notification is in error). Does that process take a while with the number of members on that site - do you know?
