wireless problem

Ok here is what my laptop computer is doing

all of a sudden my wireless connection stopped working, so i did a system restore and it started working again, then it made the updates, and it stopped working again, the system restore worked twice and then after the updates, not working again, this time more permanent, when the computer starts it tells me that the bluetooth is on, but no existence of the wlan, the driver doesn't even show up on the device manager.

Then after some time my computer became stuck it didn't respond (this due to a different issue) so I decided to force the computer to turn off, when it restarted i had a wireless conection, then I turned off the computer and when I turned it back on no internet again, then I decided to try the force turn off again, and again I had internet.

also if i have the internet working and i close my computer the internet stops working as well

does anyone know how i can solve this problem?, I can't be forcing the computer to turn itself off all the time

Can you give us a few more details about your setup ?

Is your connection to your own network or work or while roaming, what network card does your machine use.

Sorry I know nothing about laptops but if you could give the experts here as much information as possible with regards your machine and who it is you connect to like your ISP, that would help them provide you with help.

i connect to a home network, I don't know much about the card except that 802.11 AGN wlan

We still need more information to be able to help, who is your ISP what updates did you do, do you have a router you could connect to via an Ethernet cable to check if you can connect that way.

Sorry to ask so many questions but without more information we can't tell what might be wrong, it could be the wireless card gone bad or your ISP is having problems, it could be anything and without more details it will be difficult to solve :D

lets see

ISP is Road runner, through Time Warner Cable
the computer conects fine with a cable to the router, but not wireless.

there are two other computers in my house, but they conect to the internet wireless just fine.

something I forgot to mention, I thought at first it was the wireless card so i check with HP since i still had warranty, after many things that included reinstaling the card and the drivers they sent me another card thinking that that was the problem, this one didn't work either, then I did the full system restore and the wireless worked fine until the updates, donno which updates it made, the only one I remember is the service pack 1 aside from that I can't remember.

Have you looked at Windows Updates by clicking on the start orb then in the program list, that should tell you what updates were installed and when.

I know this is a silly question but you did remember to switch the wireless back on after the updates, as I said I know nothing about laptops but believe there is a switch that turns on the wireless part or maybe it's some key combination ?

Don't think I'll be able to help anymore so you may have to wait for one of the experts to join in, plus I'll be shutting down for the night in about half an hour and it will be late tomorrow before I'm back online.

As joan has said may need further info as we go along but first,

Can you see the wireless signal in the network and sharing centre?

You mention bluetooth and also 802g lan card, is this a standard wireless connection or via bluetooth?

Is this a secured wireless network?

What if any firewall are you running on the machine?

If you can post back with this info will try to guide you through some testing to diagnose the fault :D

1. it appears when the computer recognizes the wireless conection, when it doesn't it only shows the conection through a cable.

2. I think is via bluetooth, but i'm not sure, I've also heard mention in regard to my problem from the HP support center something about an NVIDIA controler.

3. yes it is a secure network.

4. I had the windows firewall as well as the norton one, when the problem stated to appear I turned the windows one off first, when this didn't solve the problem i did the same with the Norton one leaving the windows on, and then both off and still didn't work

Hi Mauricio

First thing to check is the drivers

Check on the device manager under the network adaptor branch for your network card drivers, ( as this may be bluetooth the entry may be on another branch, so you may have to look around for it a bit

).

Right click on the driver entry and you should see a Power Management Tab. On this tab make sure the "allow the computer to turn off the Device to save power" is off (un-ticked).

Sometimes this feature may cause the system to switch off the adaptor and cause the network to drop, (unfortunately it's not as good at turning it back on)

Of course if this is a Bluetooth device the range of these is not the same as a conventional wireless card and may be at the limit of it's range

Hi Mauricio,

What are the distances involved between the laptop and the router?. This can obviously effect the reliability of the signal, but should not cause the problems you are having.

What is the manufacture and model number of the laptop? Once I have that will try to grab a copy of the user manual and hopefully will see something in there that can help diagnose the problem

the distance is not big, maybe 3 or 4 feet, the laptop is a HP Pavillion 1000 series

Hi Mauricio,

OK it looks like, dependent on your actual model number, you may have both Wireless 802g wireless plus bluetooth networking.

I would suggest the next step would be to un-install your existing wireless adaptor drivers and install the latest drivers from HP Here ...

HP Pavilion dv7-1000 Entertainment Notebook PC series

As there are many versions of this particular laptop you should be careful to download the drivers for your exact model on the list. The model details should be on a sticker on the base of the laptop or on the documentation that came with it.

if you follow the link to your exact laptop obtain the drives then use device manager to completely remove the existing drivers re-boot and if windows attempts to to install its own drivers stop it and then install the new downloaded drivers that will hopefully gett the system back into operation

Try going in to device manager, click on your wireless card under Network adapters subcategory, and it will open a menu like this.

Then click the Driver menu and this menu will open:

Click on the Rollback driver page and that should work
