At the end of my tether with vista/ie7

This is bordering on the ridiculous! I have checked this forum and done extensive googling and found quite a few complaints with the same problem but no definitive answers.

I can't tell if the problem lies with VISTA or IE7 but now on an almost daily basis IE7 just decides to take a hiatus after having performed just fine for awhile and refuses to load any more web pages although an internet connection is present; no response to 'refresh' or restarting IE7. In turn, when I restart my machine, VISTA takes a full 4 minutes to just approach 'shutting down' and the whole restart process can take up to 7 minutes.

Disabled TASK MANAGER yesterday and made some reg changes regarding IE7 a while back, all of which was based on tutorial information from this forum but have not noticed any improvement. I've run HJT, online scans, avast and spybot scan, nothing unusual showed up anywhere. I've flushed DNS, emptied temporary internet files, clean and defrag the registry and drive on a regular basis. Any suggestions other than to use another browser would be welcome.

Hello hdbg62,

I'm not sure why you would disable the Task Manager either unless you just wanted to prevent access to it. :confused:

You might list everything else that you have done to see if anything may be related or not.

Have you already tried resetting IE7 to see if a add-on was part of the issue? This tutorial will show you how to if needed.

For the rest of the computer, you might look through these to help the performance. I would be sure to check out the startup programs (Step 8) to see if there is one that may be slowing up startup.

Rightly or wrongly, I disabled Task Manager based on information from "How to Enable or Disable Task Manager in Vista". It's enabled again. Have not really done any drastic changes other than a few tidbits mentioned in the Tutorials which include also some from "How to Speed Up the Performance of Vista." Have not yet tried "resetting" as I eliminated (reg. changes) some of the tool bars, information for which may or may not have come from this forum and I don't want to go through that can of worms again. In any case, IE7 performs o.k. most of the time but when it all of a sudden decides to quit then that is it. The shutdown time then is anywhere between 5-8 minutes and there's nothing I can do to speed it up. Boot time is just over a minute and when things are normal shutdown is less than that. I've reduced my tabs at startup from 6 down to one as there are some Yahoo related sites which never completely finish loading, just continuously showing the little rotating circle; this seems to have helped somewhat.

Firefox is a way to go these days..... I am using 2.0.0.15 version due to incompatibility with some plugins but all in all very good.
With No Scirpt plugin bloody brilliant

Still, having the same intermittent problem of IE7 not responding. Just a few minutes ago I closed IE7 but then reopened it because I wanted to do speed test and IE7 just absolutely refused to respond. Tried other web pages which I had open just a few minutes before - nothing! DSL was working properly, "diagnose and repair" could not find a problem, no iexplore.exe activity shown in task manager, cpu usage at 2% and no other noticable hangups in system. Restarted, and all is o.k. again. For the duration of the problem it's like IE7 just does not want load any pages.
If someone knowledgable here would ask me some questions regarding specific settings I'll be glad to furnish answers and maybe this annoyance can be resolved.

if you used this tut then try setting the settings back to normal and thats about all i know besides maybe resetting it but like you said its not the dsl.

I used IE7 long enough to download Firefox after my install of Vista Home Premium64. I recommend the same to anyone who's using IE, get firefox and you will love it 100x over IE any day. IE has security holes and other random issues like this one, odds are you can get Firefox and never have another problem again, so why wait. Try it out and see if you get the same problems.

From what I've googled about Firefox with Vista, I wouldn't want to mess with it right now; seems like it has quite a few of its own problems.

But I have made some progress with so far satisfying results; disabled some add-ons in IE7, i.e. CBrowserHelperObject/Dell,Google Toolbar Notifier BHO, HP Smart BHO Class, HP Smart Select and SSVHelper Class/Sun Microsystems. No crashes so far, don't really know which of these might be a culprit and I don't really have the time to try to find out; just know that I feel a lot better know when I get on the web

Then you're Googling articles from over a year ago. Anyone having issues right now is not running a standard Vista install, or has already b0rked their system somehow.

I was one of the brave few that ran Fx on Vista before it was officially support, back in V2 - and I still have that profile (yes, the same one) around for me to use if I ever have to revert to Fx for anything. And Fx 3.0 and 3.0.1 and 3.1 Alpha 1 work flawlessly on Vista both 32bit and 64bit.

Sun Microsystems addon is JAVA - if you go to a site that needs JAVA you'll most likely get a message saying JAVA was not detected on your machine, would you like to download it now.

As for the rest, I am not sure- but you should really look into a program called http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ - and for your own sake, don't just download it and use it - read first. Otherwise you may remove something you didn't want removed....

Thanks for your information. As stated I'm a bit happier browsing with IE 7 now and I will try to stick with IE 7 as long as I can; alas, all might not last long and perhaps you'll convert me afterall.
As far as Java goes it seems to be working just fine. I use the NOAA website quite often and some of the radar displays which do require Java are working just fine. However I do want to thank you for mentioning Java as I've discovered on Javas test site that I do not have the latest version although I don't understand how that's possible as I have Java set for automatic update; unless Java Update does not ask before connecting which is its setting in my Zone Labs Firewall.

I disabled UAC and DEP and IE7 started to behave better. No crashes. I guess IE7 is not UAC and DEP compliant no matter what Microsoft thinks.

I have no issues with both DEP and UAC enabled on all machines I use and administer myself. I just prefer Fx.

Some sites I have no choice to use IE, though, and it works.

As for your decision to use IE, I have no qualms about it - I just don't want any FUD spread around about Fx being buggy / not working on Vista.

try deleting the temp files for applications. You have to manually do this. Make sure no apps are running. Browse to your profile c:\users\***\app data\local\temp\*.* These files are for the applications themselves, not temp IE files for websites

Tried to find my last post on this subject but am not able to do so.

Installed Firefox, after a few days of no problems the same thing occurs as in IE. Am browsing, Firefox refused to load a page, can find it under Processes in Task Mgr. but unable to end, when I try to open a website from my links list, windows can't find etc.,etc. and another window tells me Firefox's already running and to close it or restart; well I can't close it in Task Mgr. and so I have to restart just as if I were using IE. So I guess it's not just IE or Firefox, maybe it's VISTA after all. As I stated in my first post in this group "OUT OF THE STONE AGE", for me personally, VISTA is a piece of crap. Shoot maybe it's DELL, nobody here has come up with a definitive answer anyway so far; try this, try that, got my toes stepped on because I did not seem to respond properly to some of the suggestions but I can tell you in all honesty I've tried them all ever since I got this rig and am getting so tired of it!

Hdbg62,

As a test, try using a Open DNS to see if it is your Internet Provider (ISP) at fault. Click Yes in the "Security Information" pop-up to see the instructions on how to use them.

If it works fine, then you will need to contact your ISP to inform them of this DNS address problem of theirs.

Thanks for the suggestion. Please keep in mind that I do have an internet connection when this happens as I am able to send and receive e-mail. With that in mind please tell me from where I can obtain the addresses you want me to type in those boxes? Sorry, I'm not familiar with this.
