going quad core

hi im going to build new machine looking at the amd quad core

AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core Black Edition, AM2+, 2.5GHz, 4MB Cache, 125w
Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF 4GB (2x XMS2 2GB) PC-8500 (1066MHz) DDR2 RAM,


Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H M/b - AMD 780G/SB700 chipset, DDR2 1066, PCI-E x16, Integrated VGA, DVI/HDMI with HDCP, SATA II RAID, USB, 1394, 8-Ch, ATX



any thoughts on the parts so far

Looks great so far. My only suggestion is if you can, wait a few weeks or so. There is alot news about AMD and Intel releasing new chips this late summer/early fall, But if you're happy with your layout now (And i would be) go for it.

the guy i buy my parts from said there will be a price drop in about 2 weeks also

i found on an american site the amd
AMD Phenom 9950 BLACK EDITION 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2

so will wait and see

wish i new some one in america prices much better than here

What do you need a quad core for? Most games are single core. Do you do Photoshop or other A/V apps that can use all four cores. I use Photoshop CS2 and will upgrade to CS4. A faster dual core might be a better option.

Agreed with the why buy an AMD.... Intel has completely taken over the market since the release of the Core 2 technology. There also is really not a significant use for the quad core yet besides being able to say that you have 4 cores, which technically isn't a true quad core yet. Do a little more reading about the comparisons between AMD and Intel, i know that i was gung hoe on AMD but honestly when you make the switch there is no going back, Intel all the way. I would settle for a high end dual core from Intel with the 45nm technology and just get a mobo that supports high overclocking and you will see the true meaning of bang for your buck.

what can i say i have been amd since the early days and the 2 Pentium 4 3gig machines i do have run bloody hot just by turning them on lol

i want quad core because its new and i have a dual digital tuner plus a single digital tuner and a sat card and i run media portal and figured it would let me run them surf the net and convert video without any trouble at all ( maybe )

intel are a lot dearer for the same performance amd or they were

i better do some more surfing thanks for all the responses thats exactly what i was after plenty of feed back

Unless the software is mutli-threading, it may not use all four cores. Vista does handle switching cores better. You might have to reset affinity to get it to function properly on older software.

as zero & others have stated intel would be the best choice for performance & its pretty cheap too

65nm....Q6600 Q6700
45nm....Q9300 Q9450

all of these quads will leave AMDs flagship chips in the dust !!!!
most of they're dualies do the same

& let me suggest even if you don't game of have a need for high quality rendering you still want a GPU

if both companies are releasing new stuff in the next couple of weeks, dont buy yet. I kicked myself when i bought an 8800 then the 9 series came out a week later & the 8800 prices dropped.

Even though i stick to intel, I find amd are better option if you dont want a hole in your wallet. I reckon if they did enough advertising, amd would sell more here in the uk coz they r generally a lot less expensive.

Q6600 is the way to go if you want a quad at a great price. Overclock it to 3Ghz and you can do pretty much anything. At stock, 2.4Ghz, it's about as fast as the 2.6Ghz Phenom if not faster. I love my quad!

in the tests it says the amd is 2.5 gig but on the net it says its 2.6 gig


well that stuffs everything up now except for the tv performance the other two are faster and run cooler

but it means a lot more money

End of the year, Intel is releasing X58 mobo and new line of processors that eliminate FSB. Also, why AMD? Athlon was better than Pentium... but it's not better than Core. And Nehalem will be even better.
