Just done a clean install of Vista, tried to load a saved to USB copy of standalone SP1.

It worked the last time i used it, only difference this time is i'm trying to install SP1 right after the Vista install.

Instead of waiting until everything gets stuck after downloading/installing a truckload of updates, I figured,
load it now and save some trouble.

I mean that's what SP1 is.... all the previous updates, up to that point, right?

Or do i even have to bother, just load SP2 perhaps.(scrap that, frustration taking over)

Not really sure how all this is supposed to work, just know that every time i've had to reinstall Vista, i've had to go through the massively tedious task of reloading all the updates. Then fart about trying to get SP's installed.

Should i be able to, Clean install Vista, then load SP1 and SP2 from saved files? And save a lot af time.


Or are the SP1/SP2 downloads a use once and throw away deal?

Hello timmeh. If you google "windows vista sp1 prerequisites" I'm afraid you will find that prerequisites do exist, so my advice is to let Windows Update check for updates until SP1 is offered, then use the standalone installer because it would be shocking if SP1 installed properly via Windows Update. That's what I did when I reinstalled Vista from a factory image that did not include SP1 in March 2015. Windows Update shouldn't slow down terribly until SP2 is installed, and we now have a workaround for that described elsewhere.

BTW if you used a factory image, you should uninstall antique versions of Java and Flash Player. If there was a free trial of Norton or another antivirus, use the appropriate removal tool. Since you are an MSE user, I would be very interested in knowing what is the first version of MSE offered by Windows Update after reinstalling Vista these days. I think MSE 4.9 requires SP1.

Yes let Window update do it's thing then install the two service packs.
Once they have been installed open cmd as administrator and type compcln.exe then click y when asked

Does SP2 require all updates as well? And is it possible to keep a copy of the SP's for reuse? I don't have unlimited download capability, doing this sort of thing wipes me out.
Have had to go through the whole process of clean install and get back up to date 4/5 times now, was hoping to find a slightly easier solution. Will try the SP files that i have, when the time is right, hopefully they will work and i won't have to download them again as well.
Have been having trouble with updates off and on for a while now(consecutive errors thread), every time i think i've got it sorted, it seems to change tack somewhat. Although i have been messing about in settings a bit, because of the problems that have been occurring, trying to improve security and hopefully make the system a little harder to dig around in for someone on the outside. Little things happen from time to time that give cause for concern, so setting up another HDD and dual boot vista/10 on that and keep the old one for experimental purposes.
Will let you know when MSE kicks in.

Well SP2 definitely requires SP1. You could give it a try once SP1 has been installed. You should certainly be able to reuse your saved copy of the standalone. I would copy it from USB to PC, right-click and select Run as administrator. It might prove necessary to Unblock it first by right-clicking and selecting Properties > General. As for easier solutions, you could use a http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/296167-vista-iso-download.html that includes SP2. In the future you might want to make a backup image using Macrium or perhaps Acronis. The time to do that is after Vista has been updated and desired software has been installed but before problems arise. Has Windows Update offered any MSE version yet?

It'll be a while, i check 8-10(max) updates at a time and let them through, less if it gets stuck for more than 25-30 min.
As for backups and images, i've had it set where ever possible to automatically set restore points, can never find useful/useable ones when i need them.
Never been able to use an image for restoration, best i've got was all extra software removed and put in an innaccessible folder, all settings back to default, lost internet access.

I recommend Macrium Reflect for backup images if reinstalling on the same machine. Make a boot disc too. A guide is on my site

Try copying the stand alone to your desktop or somewhere else to the hard drive since sometimes updates might refuse to install unless they are on the hard drive. Other than that there are no prereqs for sp1 and the only prereq for sp2 is sp1 when it comes to using the installer. Windows update might not offer the service packs until certain updates have been installed. You might also want to try and re-download the stand alone installers. Now what happened when you tried to run the installer?

Oops! My apologies, it looks like townsbg is right. Having recently built a 2008 VM I had checked the specs for the downloads. I didn't want to have to use or keep the sp1 installer if I didn't need to. Unfortunately they are not cumulative.

I came across a prereq. list of updates. KB 949939, KB 937287, KB 935509, KB 938371. Got the first and last, but have no way of getting the other two.
Not in the available list and can't get more until the currently available list is cleared(45 updates awaiting installation), one of which is SP1 framework 3.5(all updates failed since that came up for install).
My research tells me SP1 released in 2007, updates are already up to 2009. Can't get SP1 installed, only thing i can do now is try one or two updates at a time and hope they are successful, until, hopefully some more updates come through.
This is the part where it kills my download capability, gets eaten up even if updates failed.
I don't understand why these updates don't come in the correct order.
I had read somewhere that SP1 is just all the updates up to the release date, but have not been able to load it straight into a clean install. All info on the subject that i have found says that prerequisite KB's are required, and i always have trouble getting the right ones when they are needed.

For the download no previous patches are required. You only need to install certain patches if using windows update.

The standalone SP1 download would not install. Had to do it 3 or 4 times now, have not been able to get it to install until certain udates have been successfully installed.

The SP1 standalone file that i'm using is one that i have on flashdrive. Have used it approx. 12 months ago on two separate occasions, both successful.
Have copied to desktop, run as admin. Message i get is

"This application has failed to start because 'ADV[]PI72Dll' can't be found"
"try reinstalling appblahblahmight fix the problem"

Having a lot of trouble with wireless signal, keep losing connection, quite often no indication on desktop.
had a lot more info in this post, lost it all due signal drop.

Click on start menu and type in cmd. Without double clicking on command prompt right click on it and select run as administrator. In the command prompt box type in scf /scannow.

Thats the first time anything untoward has shown up in any scans performed on this install of vista. This one is the one i set up last year after major crash.

Brief history: Purchased machine and Vista software Nov 2008.
Crashed Oct 2009.
IT Tech clean installed and set up Nov 2009. All good until Jul last year.
Clean installed and fully updated vista again myself. Crashed again about 6 weeks later.
Had problems when trying to do it all again a second time. Stuck at SP2 IIRC.
Purchased W10 software, installed no problem but could not get online.
Tried Vista again, stuck at SP1.
Called Tech to fix. They installed W7. Couldn't or wouln't install Vista or W10.
I used W7 for internet access to find info to get W10 up and running myself. Successful.
Then i got Vista up and running again. Successful.
Kept W7 until i was confident everything was OK, then deleted it.
Realised a while back what a mess i had made of the multiboot setup. Now trying to set it up better.

Have been having minor issues for some time now, although nothing has shown up in any scans. Can't recall if i've ever run sfc as admin.

Happened again, lot more info on edit and lost it. Got to the end and it won't save.

This indicates that service pack 2 is already installed. Right click on computer and look to see if it says service pack 2. If that's true then you don't need to install service pack 1.

Ran it on the wrong HDD. Will have to switch drives and run again, then transfer info.
Have original HDD, 150GB, oldest and most up to date version of Vista. Having problems.
Also have 2nd drive, 500GB, latest install of Vista.
Trying to rearrange the system to negate the need for the old HDD, should it fail. It has "sys res" from the W7 install that rendered my W10 install(on other HDD) inoperable unless still connected to the system.
