Solved Memory Question

Hi guys, just facing a bit problem in upgrading the RAM.
I have Intel 945 express chipset family motherboard.
There is a 1 GB DDR2 PC 5300 333Mhz RAM card in 1 slot and the other slot is empty. When is use SIW to check the motherboard details, it shows that i can have maximum 4 GB RAM and there are only 2 RAM slots. So i m assuming that i can add a 2 GB RAM card in each slot. My question is:
How would i know if the motherboard supports DDR2 RAM with a higher speed (like 667 MHz or 800 Mhz)?
I dont want to blow my motherboard by adding something which it cant hold. I also checked in www.intel.com but did not find much info.
Pleas help.

You can go to Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com and download the scan tool and they will tell you what ram you can use.

You need to know the name of your motherboard. Use CPU-Z and go to the mainboard tab. Once there look at whats next to "model"

Im not a fan of crucial (too expensive) ut i did see a post a while ago about the crucial scanne bluescreening some guys 64 bit vista , so i went and installed the active x control and when the site tried to run it my rig bluescreened!! Just wondering if this is still the case with Vista x64

I'm not sure about that since I don't have x64. You don't have to buy crucial ram just get what they say is compatible

I dont buy crucial anyway mate , they dont sell the the kind of ram i use the other problem with crucial is they dont actually tell yuo what the ram is (type/speed etc) they just give you a link to what they can sell you , overpriced

That said i did buy some ram for the wifes laptop the other week cheapest i could find was 1 gig for for £10 , the same ram from crucial was £11 which for them isnt too bad free delivery too



DINESH if you an give me the make and model number of your mobo i can tell you exactly what will and wont work in it , incidently if you do put ram in thats faster it wont matter , the ram will run ok just at the slower rated fsb of the mobo , that said you do really need to put in a matched pair of sticks to avoid any possible incompatibilities between the sticks

thats your chipset mate not your motherboard all i can tell you so far is that chipset supports 1066 / 800 and 533mhz ram , and it supports up to 4gb , but without knowing waht the mobo is that the chipset is on its difficult.

Is it a pre built shop bought pc? if so put the make and model here maybe we can look that up

that program just caused me my very first BSOD in vista EVER!

mad props to you!

also, my pc rebooted within 1 second of showing the BSOD message so I was unable to actually read what caused it. Also I am too lazy to dig up the logs.

Yeah you shouldnt use some dodgy online scanner. If you dont know what your motherboard is then download CPU-Z and go to the mainboard tab and it will tell you your motherboard. Heres mine:

So from that i know i have an ASUS P5K-VM and can simply google the board. If you still dont know for sure then post a pic like the one above.

No its not pre built| its a custom build. i will use cpu z and will let you guys know about the make of the motherboard. Give me some time.

Ayporos, I am a newbie who gets BSODs daily. Here's what Smarteyeball, a Vista Guru on this forum, told me to do to pause the blue screen so you can read it.

"To stop the automatic restart at BSOD:

Right-click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Start Up and Recovery (settings) > and untick the automatically restart box and hit OK."

It worked for me so I can write down the number following the word Stop. I am in daily contact with Microsoft trying to solve my BSODs. It's a nightmare.
One of the advanced techies is going to help me tomorrow they say.

BTW, I went to crucial to see what size RAM I could use and had no problem at all.

I understood his complaint. It didn't hurt my pc, unless that's why I get blue screens so often. I really think I was on my XP when I was hunting for more RAM though. Not positive, though, because I switch from one to the other.

An a question for you, Archie, if everyone who runs 64 goes to Crucial and gets blue screens how do all these people get rid of BSODs. I need help for that.
