Temporay lockup after boot Lockup

I have a HP Elite book laptop with Windows Vista business, 64 bit, 4G memory, 2.4 GHZ, Windows Security Essentials. The laptop has run well since I have had it. About a month or so ago it started to lockup (keyboard and mouse) shortly after startup. After a minute or two all returns to normal and no further problems until the next boot. Not sure what information I need to pass on to help, but any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Many thank in advance, Eastbayboy

Welcome to Vista Forums eastbayboy. Have you installed http://www.vistax64.com/windows-upd...-security-essentials-4-9-218-0-kb3140527.html (published February 23)? If so, I suspect it might be causing your issue, which actually sounds less serious than problems reported by other Vista users in the thread linked above. If you check Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions > View problem history, are there any suspicious reports since 2/23/2016, particularly for Microsoft Security Client? If so, please make sure that Report Sent to Microsoft, and if possible view and copy the problem details and paste them in a post here. Many Vista users have restored their systems to escape the update, and some like myself never installed it, so we don't have very much information about the exact nature of the problem.

Then again, your issue might be something else altogether - particularly if you have not installed the MSE update.

I checked problem history and the problem appears to have started on 16Jan2016 with 15 problem reports after 16Jan. I have only two problem reports for 2015 and 2014 and then a bunch for 2013. I think I will just take Security Essentials off and see if the problem goes away. I have another security program I can use. Any other insights would be appreciate.

Well the Security Essentials update couldn't have been installed before February 23 at the earliest. You did not say whether or not it is listed in your Windows Update history, or what kind of problem reports you found.

Of course that problem report was before the 4.9.218.0 update was installed. I am still running MSE 4.8.204.0, as are many other Vista users, because of problems reported with the February 23 update (more serious than your issue for reasons unknown). I also had a few MpTelemetry problems, but mine appear to have been related to failed definition updates - never Problem Signature 03: ScanFile. Are you using another antivirus program besides Microsoft Security Essentials? Do you have problem reports of any kind since MSE 4.9.218.0 was installed? If you try to open MSE and run a Quick Scan, is it working?

I had a problem like you post and it turned out to be a defrag running after start up even though I had turned off defrag
Kerish Doctor found it. I think they may have a free version (I got mine from giveawayoftheday.com)

I now believe the problem is related to Firefox. Firefox boots on startup and the lockup occurs shortly after that. I took Firefox out of the startup and manually started it from the desktop. The lockup occurred shortly after Firefox started. I rebooted and started Internet Explorer and no lockup. I had a FireFox update on 12Feb2016 Ver 44.0.2. One the the fixes listed in the update is to correct crashes on lockup. Doesn't look like the update worked!!

Hmmm, I'm also using Firefox 44.0.2 but I do not have your problem. Of course there is Mozilla Support. Here's a general article about problems along those lines: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-takes-long-time-start-up. It's still possible that this is an antivirus issue. In post #3 you wrote, "I have another security program I can use." Which program is that, and did you install it in January or February? I'm still extremely curious about that MSE update you installed on February 25. (I have hidden it, and I'm still using the previous MSE version.)

The other security program I have is an older McAfee which is not loaded on the computer. The only other security program loaded is Windows Defender which is turned OFF. No other security program has been installed for quite a while. Not sure what you are asking me to look at for the 25Feb MSE update? I don't know how to hid the update.

Has this issue been resolved? (Of course Firefox 45.0 is now available.)

I was reminded of this thread by something else I came across: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/ind...tfilelessmtgen-removed-still-having-problems/, which is actually the only other case I've seen involving MSE 4.9.218.0 on 64-bit Vista where the user was free to worry about something other than black screen of death after login.

Malwarebytes Free is a good program that would not interfere with MSE. I would suggest deselecting the free trial of Malwarebytes Premium during installation.
