Preparing an SSD and Vista

Gday everyone

Okay have purchased a SSD (waiting for it's arrival).

Steps I have taken for it's install :-

1. Modified the registry Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
Set the value to 0 (zero)
2. Disabled Superfetch and Readyboost
3. I use a 3rd Party Defragger - Auslogics Disk Defrag already, so I can pick and choose which drives I want to defrag.
4. Modified [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters] to 0 (zero)
5. Modified [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction]
"Enable"="N"

I have read that Vista does not support TRIM, so I have a question, what impact will that have on my SSD?

I bought the SSD to use solely for my OS, and all my programmes, and I plan on cloning my current C:\ over to the new SSD, then just wiping the old C:\ and let it sit there empty.

I plan on keeping my old IDE HD and SATA HD, and as you should see I have 3 External HD's, where not only do I have my backup images (Paragon and Macrium), but also everything that is important, music, pics, doc's and programmes.

One thing I am not sure about is the AHCI in the BIOS, do I / can I set it to AHCI now or do I wait until the SSD is installed?

I also found out this evening Winblows aka Microflacid will no longer be bringing out Critical Updates for Vista by early April 2013. (Yet they're still supporting XP until 2014) Which as end user bites, I do have a Win7 Ultimate Retail Disk, but personally I don't like Win7, and apparently Win7 is only going to have support for another 18 month's.

Microflacid must think the average person has their own money tree growing. I for one don't I am on a Pension.

I've never messed around with an SSD. I am not sure where you got your information on Vista updates but I do know that support of vista does not go out until 2017. Mainstream support ended last year however they will continue to release updates until 2017.

Im in Australia, rang MS in Australia, they were the ones who told me. Every country is different go figure.

I will say freely I openly voiced my displeasure, because I jumped straight from Win2k to Vista, I purchased a Retail Version, which was not a cheap exercise. I expected Vista to have at least half decent shelf life, I like Vista, okay I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea. But the system I built, I built with Vista in mind, so my system is more than capable of running it.

2k to Vista is quite a leap; how was the learning curve? As for updates you will continue to be able to install them until the extended support is up no matter where you live. However you might not be able to call them up and ask for help, at least not for free. I don't know what the policy is for Australia.

lol here in Australia, you get a WHOLE month of free support, then they try and charge you. As for the learning curve, there were a couple of things between 2k and Vista, Vista's UAC (bloody annoying thing, it soon got disabled), that and it meant not only did I purchase the retail version for myself, but I had to for my old man too, 2k the key was able to be used on multiple machines.

For me personally, everything I know about PC's (from building one through to the software apps) I am self taught, they fascinate me, and not blowing my own horn, but I have an above average IQ, (I am a redhead not a blonde ) so usually I can figure MOST things out NOT EVERYTHING.

So to answer your question about the learning curve, the only thing I really learnt was that my dual core with 2GB ram, just wasn't quick enough to respond for me with Vista, so I built my current tower lol.

So why don't you have an SSD? Damnit Anikin, get one so you can help me :D , they're supposedly made for Win7. I know I am an oddball, I don't mind forking out the big $$ for hardware for my machine, but the only software I will pay for is my OS, Virus protection, and backup software.

I also go for the Retail version (yes I know a LOT MORE EXPENSIVE), as opposed to the Upgrade disks, so as I said I have a Retail version of Win7, sitting in my cupboard, but I just don't like it, so in all likelihood, I will keep using Vista, until it dies, then upgrade to the next Winblows useless OS that has no shelf life like Vista lol

Ok what gave me away? Is it the creepy yellow eyes? I'll just say that I am no longer a Windows user and if you think that 7 is bad then you'll hate 8. Talk about a learning curve. I'm no novice on windows but the new interface confuses the h*** out of me. It gives me a headache just thinking about it.

You on Mac now?

Oh yeah. I got an imac over a year ago and last december the PSU in my desktop died so I switched over. I know that I could have replaced it but I didn't want to. I gave it to a guy at work who fixed it up for his kids. I didn't think that it was worth anything but he was offered $150 for it.

I've still got some windows virtual machines for what I can't do with mac.

Oh noes not a Winblows user!! .... you playing with toys now lol Mac's are for kids hehe, and yes I know Win8 is more tablet looking in its GUI.

BUT Microflacid assure me it is configurable coffbulls***coff excuse me if I don't believe Microflacid .

Having said that the majority of the general populous use Winblows, that and I have all the apps for Winblows.

I didn't say that I don't use windows. For the apps that don't work on mac I have both windows 7 and Vista virtual machines (actually I have more than that). I wanted to do a dual boot but my desired configuration didn't work so I stuck with a virtual machine. It isn't for everbody just the elite few.

Well it certainly is no kid's toy. Not for what I paid. Some people would take real offense to that so you might want to stop dissin' it.

Well unlike some mac owners I am not a fanatic.

So no one here has or uses an SSD?
