Solved Change arrangement of users on log-on screen.

Hey,
I was adding a new account on my computer. For basic purposes, I made a new account called "User B". Now, when I switch users/log off, I see that it goes like this
"User B User A". I would like "User A" to be the first option, THEN "User B". Any help?

(I have hidden the names of the "Users" for privacy reasons)

Hi Metamence,

As far as I know, the order of username presentation on the Welcome Screen cannot be configured. There's no standard option available to adjust this (and I'm aware of no 3rd party software that changes this particular aspect of the Welcome Screen - many other, but not this one). I haven't been able to determine how it even establishes the order it does use. I went through the entire registry looking and searched 30 pages in Bing and Google and found no solutions.

Sorry, but it does not appear that what you want to do is possible in Vista (or in Windows 7 or XP either to my knowledge). I wish I had better news, but that seems to be the way it is.

Good luck!

The account order is alphabetical, based on the VERY first name. You can see a description here: Can order of user accounts on welcome screen be changed - Windows 7 Forums

If you are really adamant that you want this changed, the only method I can see would be to back up all user data, delete all but one account, re-create the accounts as AUserB, CUserC, and leave UserA as it is. This would make the order AUserB, CUserC, and UserA. Delete and re-create UserA as BUserA. The order would now be AUserB, BUserA, CUserC. Go into the accounts, and remove the letter in front. This would now leave UserB, UserA, UserC.

Not very nice!

I shall have a quick search around, and see if I can find a better way, but don't get your hopes up.

Ah, thanks for the help guys.
I adjusted them accordingly to how niemiro set it up. It's good, just not what I wanted.
Again, thanks.

I guess you REALLY wanted that different order. I sure hope you don't have to add any new users (or nobody wants to change their name) given what it takes to rearrange it - LOL! To be honest, even if I had thought of or found this option, I quite possibly wouldn't have posted it as being much too unreasonable to suggest.

Anyway, I'm glad it is sorted for you.

Good luck and best wishes!

P.S. The order MUST be stored somewhere, somehow (though possibly not where it can be changed). I intend to keep looking in my spare time to see if I can locate it.

I don't think that it does, actually (IMO) When you change the name of the account, the FULL NAME is still the original name, but the Display name changes. It is a bit like forum user names and display names. The Full Name cannot be changed.

When you get the option to log on, it enumerates the registry for Full Name, and sort by alphabetic ON THE FLY.

Some people have tried to change their Full Name, as that is in the registry. They get a "User Profile Service failed to logon error" This is the only known cause of this error, but there is still a second cause, which caused the random error for random people. Sorry, there is a second cause. If you try to change your user folder name manually (ie in Linux) the registry is not updated as it would be if you used the User Configuration Window, and you can also get this error.

This is just speculation. It may well not actually work like this, it just shows one way which it could be ordered on the fly, and does not actually require the registry.
