USB 2.0 recognising as 1.1

There was a power outage while my PC was on, after turning it on and plugged in my wireless USB adapter, which I've been using for years, I get a message saying This device can perform fater by plugging into a 2.0 usb port. I hadn't changed anything or installed any new devices or software.

I looked in my BIOS, the only thing I found relating to USB was "Onboard USB Controller" which was under "Intergrated pheriphals". it is set to "V1.1 +V2.0" the other available options were "disabled" and "v1.1".

I have updated my chupset from nvidia and also uninstalled and let windows re-install the USB controller drivers and reinstalled vista. I'm currently running service pack 1.

Any help and advice appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Robert,

You might check your BIOS settings to see if there is one to select between USB 2.0 and 1.1. They may have been reset.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi. I checked the BIOS again, should there be more options for USB controller? I can only find them in "integrated peripherals" menu and I can only find those 3 options in there.

"disable"
"V1.1 +V2.0" this is checked
"v1.1"

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated when it did use USB 2.0 may be able to help.

That's one thing I can't do because I foolishly reinstalled Vista by accident, the restore point is for that date.

What happens if you plug your wireless device into another USB port?

Have you tried another USB Device?

Also try putting another USB Device in the Same port as you do with your Wireless adapter

do you get the Message?

Your USB Port may only compatible with USB V 1.1

Many Thanks,
Josh

Thank you for your reply. I've been using this device for a ouple of years and have noticed performance has slowed since getting this message.

Something I completly failed to notice. It turns out it could be the device. I've just plugged in another wireless adapter, which I thought I broke, and it works, no error message. Although the speeds not as good as the other device when it was fully functional but least it's an improvement.

I don't understand why windows recognised the original device as 2.0, it seemed there was a problem with the port.

Thank you, I would have never tried that if you hadn't mentioned it.

You could try using the default ms usb drivers. After installing my chipset driver, i had to revert to MS' usb drivers because the intel ones were causing trouble.

My massive wifi antenna is in the post!
Ok this has not been solved......I bought the same Wireless adapter, held my breath, plugged it in and got the message again. I have been using this type adapter for 3 years so I don't understand why this is happening. The wireless adapter is a belkin F5D7050UK. Other USB devices I've tried; 16GB flash drive, DVD burner, Printer, PSP and 2 older wireless adapters, I only get the USB message when I plug in my belkin but don't understand why.

How do I revert back to MS drivers?
