Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them

Good day!

A problem occurred with my HP notebook. I was watching a movie clip in a site when my laptop suddenly froze. I pressed the power button to turn it off. After few minutes, I turned it on and was able to use it again. But after a while, the display turned all blue and it said that I should call the Hard Disk/Drive Support because of Hard Disk/Drive malfunction. I turned it off again. As soon as I got to use it, I contacted HP and talked to one of their online technicians. He asked me to have my laptop undergo the Hard Disk Self Test and to contact them again to report the result of the test. The result was the Hard Disk/Drive passed. I talked to them again. Since the laptop passed, the technician just asked me to have it undergo SFC scan. Then the chat session ended.

It was my first encounter with SFC scan, so, I didn't really have an idea about it. Then it said, "Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them, etc." It said something about CBS.logs, which I did not understand. I just followed it in Local Disk C, but was unable to open it because it said that access is denied. It then prompted me to research about the sfc scan and its details. All my searches led me here.

I was able to know how to get the details of the sfc scan, through the help of this site. But, my problem now is, I do not know how to solve the issue stated by the sfc scan details. This is what the latest detail says:

Well done on getting this far! You have proven skill beyond anything we normally see! Right!

You may have noticed that the corruption lies at settings.ini. This file is located at C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\settings.ini

This is an issue we see a lot, and is not really an issue at all. If you change a Windows Sidebar setting, if you install an app, if you disable the Windows Sidebar, if the factory installs an app, then settings.ini is changed to accommodate these settings, to save them. This settings.ini file is now different from the default settings.ini. Any file that is different, is classified as a corruption by SFC. So, what I am saying is that this is the most common "corruption" and is the only one that does not matter.

I wish Microsoft had white-listed this file. I do not see any purpose in reporting a "corruption" that appears if you change settings, and use your PC as you should.

So, this is not a problem. Just ignore this. This is the only corruption found, and so there is no problem. :) If you do have any other problems, or any other questions, do not hesitate to ask.

I got curious about that sfc scan, the CBS.log where it states that the details of the scan are located, etc. So I explored my folders and files.. But thanks really to this site, I was able to see the scan details because of a code given in one of the posts here.

I got curious about that sfc scan, the CBS.log where it states that the details of the scan are located, etc. So I explored my folders and files.. But thanks really to this site, I was able to see the scan details because of a code given in one of the posts here.

You are more than welcome! Computers sometimes do odd things, but if this does happen again, do feel free to come back here, or to create a new thread. :)

It is good to be curious! Just for your information, if a file corruption cannot be fixed, I will supply you with a known good copy. Sometimes it can take a little while (few days) as I may have to get it from another member with your version of Vista, but we can get you one in the end. In fact, I do have a copy of Vista Home Premium x64, so I could supply you one myself. :)

i have the same issue about cbs.log. i have messed around and found that i my 'access is denied' when i am not booted up in safe mode. i tried several times today to post a reply, but eventually got a message stating the code was too big...i will boot up in safe mode and post my cbs.log and have a couple of replies for you to look through...
