I am trying to help a friend with BSOD issues and when I go look for the minidump in C:/windows I find no minidump file folder. Is this something I need to create for him or is it just hidden.

The C:\Windows\Minidump folder may be hidden.
Or, the dumps may be stored in the file C:\Window\memory.dmp.

There are many reasons that a memory dump may not be captured. To start with, go to Start and type in SYSDM.CPL and press Enter.
Then click on the Advanced tab, then on the Startup and Recovery Settings button.
In the next window there'll be a "Write debugging information" section - what does it say there?

usama,

Thank you for your reply, I will check the SYSDM.CPL\Advanced\startup and recovery\System failure setting tomorrow.

Depending on the crash, sometimes a dump simply doesn't get generated.

The C:\Windows\Minidump folder doesn't get created until a successful minidump has been written.

There are many different reasons for not having memory dumps:
- Crash reporting not setup correctly.
- Disabled services
- Pagefile too small
- crash happens before the crash reporting mechanism has loaded.
- crash occurs below the level that Windows is able to recognize.
- other stuff (read the Windows Internals books for more info)
