How would you rate this PSU...

Guys, I have come to trust the knowledge here and I am looking to upgrade my PSU so I will be able to run both my GPU cards (EVGA GTX260 + ECS 8800GT). I am getting different answers from different people so I just need to make sure I won't be throwing my money away.

I have read some reviews of it but still, their answers are not specific.

Should be OK. This brand of PSU is used and recommended by Scott Mueller, of Upgrading and Repairing PCs fame.

PCP&C are a good brand, this PSU also comes with upward of 60A on the ''single'' 12v rail ..... i think a single ''strong'' 12v rail is much better than multiple rails (which are a myth anyway)

don't know if its modular..?? but its a powerful PSU

if all your looking to do is run 2x 8800GTs this is slightly overkill, but it will certainly do the job....

Its a good brand. Im a big fan of the ABS Tagan modular PSUs though.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input, it means a lot to me and I am going to pull the pin on it I think. Hell, if I can sell mine for half the price I made out like a bandit!

It is not modular but I have room in my case to stuck the rest of the cables there.

No, I am not going to be using 2 x 8800GT. As explained above, it will be:

1st Card ----- EVGA GTX260 768MB... according to evga, this card needs 36a

2nd Card ----- ECS 8800GT 512MB ... don't really know how much amperage this card needs

Again, I thank you for it. I had read somewhere else that the Brand was a good Brand but since I don't frequent that site, I couldn't commit to it.

34A may be recommended but im running my GTX260 off a 600w with a 30A 12v & it has no probs at all....

the 8800GT is rated for 24A on the 12v but this will also run on much less....

why are you going to run an 8800GT with a GTX260 ??

You cant run two differnt Video cards in SLI can you?? I remember i asked about this, and didnt think you could...

I want to use my GTX260 for primary purposes and my 8800GT strictly for PhysX rendering. I may be trying to do this when none of the games are really optimized for it but, sometimes, I get crazy urges like this

Besides, I payed to much for my 8800GT to sell it at the prices they are going for now so, might as well make some use of it.

lordbob, you are correct but, as stated above, I am not planning on doing SLI. My mobo is capable of running two cards at x16 on the pcie slots so might as well take advantage of it, right? :D

Don't believe everything you read on the internet though!

Until one of the Gurus at Vista Forums gives me their seal of approval, I am not going to say anything positive about, just that... I wanted to do it! :D

PhysX Performance Update: GPU vs. PPU vs. CPU

Now, being said that, I just did a test with this playing Crysis Warhead and well, just as I expected, having both cards hinder my FPS's instead of making any gains... these was done both with "Seat of the Pants" software and "Fraps"

Frames: 6582 - Time: 182341ms - Avg: 36.097 - Min: 25 - Max: 76
EVGA GTX260 + ECS 8800GT

2009-01-14 19:49:35 - Crysis
Frames: 35591 - Time: 821599ms - Avg: 43.319 - Min: 12 - Max: 82
EVGA GTX260 Only

See for yourself, perhaps not a big deal but enough to make you sad since, according to them, having 2 cards would increase your frame rates and not lower them. Now, all I have to do is wait for my new PSU to come in and test this again. Hopefully (for my wallet's sake), my current PSU will be the culprit! :cool:

P.S.: Is anything going to go wrong with Vista when I change the PSU? I ask this because everytime I disconnect any USB device from the PC, Vista starts to install every other driver known to man and well, I am afraid to loose my OS just cause I am changing a PSU since the mobo will loose power. I guess what I am trying to ask is... what, if anything, I need to do before I change PSUs.

im in a similar position to you....... im about to grab my self a physX card, & i also have an 8800GT sitting here, but TBH anything requiring an external power source is overkill for physx...

dont get me wrong the 8800GT will handle physX very well as it has 112 SPs & the new PSU your gonna grab will deliver easily enough for both cards, so ''in your situation'' it wont hurt to chuck it in...

my situation differes slightly in that my current PSU is at its MAX output & will not take my 88GT with the 260, so after some reaserch i found the best card for ''me'' to run physX would be a 9500GT, this card requires no external power & is a proven performer, though is does only have 32 SPs...... the 88GT would work better but its not practical for me to stick it in.

so bottom line .....physX is a reality for us Nvidia users & its only gonna become more prominant in games, so physX cards will really start to shine.

here are some physX benches, with a 9600GT as the physX card, even the GTX280 shows nearly a 10fps increase :eek:

I see your point and I understand it but, for me, spending extra $$$ on another card when I have a good one seating here is not feasible, I rather spend it on another needed upgrade, hence, the new PSU.

Thanks for the heads up on installing the new PSU, I rather be safe by asking, although, I am still not comfortable with it since, as stated before, Vista does a lot of changes when I unplug USB cables from the back of the machine, I can only imagine what it will do after I unhook the power from the mobo... shrugs! :D.

the key to PSU change is ''firm yet gentle''..... (if that makes sense), removing the mobo plugs is always the worst due to the pressure you (sometimes) need to apply

let the tower sit unplugged for 10mins before you remove the existing PSU (just in case)

remember if you must touch the mobo try to keep your fingertips to the edge of the board

also be careful of that point just as the plug is about to come out, there is a risk of serious damage should your hand jolt sideways when it finally pops out....

i've heard stories of ppl snapping RAM clean off in the slots while pulling on a mobo plug.. :cry:
