How to uninstall DX9 from Vista

I loaded up a brand new install yesterday and installed all of this in the following order. I let windows install SP1 thru windows updates online. I normally use the 700+mb vistax64wave0.exe (5 language offline installer package).

Fernandos_Vista_64bit_NF4-7_SATA_Performance_Pack_v5.0 (680i SLI A1)
180.43_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_beta.exe (8800GTX ACS3 KO)
SBXF_PCDRVBETA_US_2_18_0006.exe (XFI Extreme Music)
ALMY_PCVTAPP_LB_1_20_04.exe (Enable 5.1 surround sound and EAX)
nHancer64_2.4.2_Setup.exe (Needed specificly for games with HDR+AA)
Xvid 1.1.3 and x64 Components 5.53 beta (Windows x86 and x64 codecs)
Live 365 Desktop Radio, iTunes, Steam, EA Link, and security programs.

Everything was working fantastic with this, until...

The very last thing I installed after everything SP1 + All windows updates were completely done was DirectX Aug 2008 Redist. Now my system is sluggish and my games run very slow and produce mouse lag which didn't exist until I installed this.

My thoughts on this was, hey newer drivers and fixes are always better right? WRONG! What a nightmare every since I installed this directx aug 2008 redist.

I need to know how to remove DX9, so I can use the web updater without affecting the DX10 aspect of the vista OS. Something that was packaged inside of the redist has caused me major software conflicts.

I only updated directx for gaming, is it even worth it to update directx?

Hi Roush,

There is no way to uninstall DirectX, While DX9 and DX10 are separate they are both needed for all games and its worth the update because it usually makes games more responsive, faster and looking better....

The only way to remove that update you installed is using System Restore, You can select a restore point just before you installed the DX9 Redist ;)

I suspect the problems your having are being caused by something else using DX9 concurrently while your playing though :confused:

The redist versions of dx9 caused me trouble a few weeks ago. Assassins creed would just freeze up for 10 seconds everytime i murdered anyone & the load times were way too long

I managed to do a sloppy reinstall which fixed my problems.

Btw-Altering the registry can cause your system to mess up so i would suggest backing up your pc before doing this using system restore or something

If you type regedit into the start menu search box & open it & go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft

Find & right click the 'DirectX' folder on the left pane & click export, save it as directxreg_backup or something. Then delete the DirectX folder (do not delete it without backing it up first)

Now go to C:\windows\system32 & scroll through all the files until you find ones with names like d3d9.dll, d3d10.dll. The ones you need to look for specifically should be labelled d3dx9_xx.dll (where xx is a number)

Now you need to delete all d3dx files from d3dx9_24.dll to d3dx10_39.dll. Dont worrry about deleting the directx10 files, they do come bundled in the installer

Then use the directx end user installer to reinstall directx

Be careful, DX is highly integrated into the OS. Break it, you are reinstalling the OS. What is the event viewer error?

Thank you, that registry editing and deletion x dll files allowed me to reinstall using the online web update.

Its all good *thumbs up*, my games run flawless once again without any slowdowns or mouse lag.

BTW I don't use system restore, I just always wipe the drive and reinstall.
From the second my OS loads on a re-format I do the following in this order.

Shut off system restore
Install Vista x64 Service Pack 1

start and type command
vssadmin list shadowstorage
vassadmin resize shadow storage /for=C: /on= C: /MaxSize=1GB

Enable UAC special admin switch by going to Control panel/Administrative Tools/Local Security Policy/Local Policies/Security Options/User Account Control: Behavior of elevation for admins in admin approval mode. "Change from prompt to evelvate without prompting" (UAC Stays Enabled, without those popups)

Disable screen saver and change power to high performance.
Turn off monitor to never Turn off hard drive never.
Load desktop wallpaper.

Control panel/Problem report and solutions - I clear its XFI warnings then switch it off.

Taskbar and start menu properties, I uncheck both boxes under privacy section and then I go into the start menu and uncheck "highlight newly installed programs.

The very last thing I do is change IE7 launch page to www.google.com
Load drivers and grab all updates.

Thank you for the information on the registry entry and the dll's cause as you can now see system restore goes within the first minute after install. It eats up space as does that shadowstorage.
