Vista 'Sleep Mode' Crashing the computer.

Sorry to call it a sleep mode i'm not entirely sure what it is but it's the default option for the key next to the search bar before the computer lock. When highlighted it says, "Keeps your system in memory and puts the computer in a low-power state so that you can quickly continue working."

Essentially what happens is i click the button (mostly by accident as i just switched from xp) and the computer shuts down immediately without doing anything. I'm like sure sleep mode ok and click the mouse and sure enough the computer spins back to life. Only as soon as it spins up it shuts off again then 3 seconds or so later it spins up again, rinse and repeat until i pull the power. I did try the power button to no avail.

Now the computer runs fine if i don't touch this button. I assumed it was a faulty powersupply, as i didn't associate the problem to the button at the time, so i took it out and sent it in to get fixed and put my old computers powersupply in and it booted right up and worked fine for a day until i clicked that button in which case the comptuer did the exact same thing.

I just finished building the computer.

apevia 600w psu (the one i returned was a corsair 750w)

i'm using ultimate x64.

This is fairly strange and I don't really have any ideads at the moment. But I was just going to tell you that you can change what that button does in the Power Options:

Control Panel > Power Options. Click on "Change plan settings" for the current power plan, then click "Change advanced power settings". Expand the "Power buttons and lid" section, then the "Start menu power button". Select what you want it to be, et voilà.

Well thanks for the bit about changing that, now at least i won't hit it by accident.

It's definitely something and sleep mode. As i left the computer for an hour and the comp went into sleep mode and i had to reboot it. I had forgotten to turn off auto sleep from the last time. Tested shutdown, log out, and restart again and they all worked fine and then tried sleep mode one more time and it crashed again.

So i'm completely baffled as to what could be causing it except either corruption in the vista install or i have an insomniac piece of hardware that is malfunctioning and i can't tell.

Oh just to give a tad bit more info, it makes no noise like it errors out or anything just quietly shuts off. Also the mobo I'm using is a gigabyte x48-dq6.

LOL, you have the same motherboard (GA-X48-DQ6) as I do. Sleep is working fine for me.

Have you already installed the latest BIOS F7 version:

GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-X48-DQ6


Plus, the latest Chipset 8.3.1.1011 version:

GIGABYTE - Support - Motherboard - Driver - GA-X48-DQ6


Be sure to install the latest driver versions for your other devices as well. Especially the video driver.

If the problems persists, check your sleep settings with Option Two in this tutorial to see if it can help you any.

This is a known issue and the culprit is most likely Nvidia Graphics drivers.
MS and Nvidia (and a few others I guess) are working on nailing this down, it seems to have become more prevalent after SP1 has been installed too.
Just stay away from Sleep or Hibernation until this issue has been addressed by the offending vendor. If I see the fix released on any of the sites I'll post it here for all the folks here who have this problem.

Does pressing the reset button work, I ask this because it may be the cpu is not getting a power good signal from the psu causing the resets. Pressing the reset button bypasses this.

I had installed the chipset though i missed the BIOS update so i'll give that a try.

Have you heard of this with Ati at all? As i'm using a Redeon 4870 not an Nvidia card.

Are you talking about after it enters sleep mode and its turning on and off? If you are then the reset button didn't do anything. If you aren't then i can't say i've tested the button yet to know if it works or not i'll give it a try when i get home. The Psu currently in the computer should be working correctly as it was originally in my old XP computer and i never once had any issues with it.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you I went to try the bios update and downloaded the new version and go to install and it tells me that it doesn't support vista ultimate 64 and i need to download that version, which of course i don't see anywhere.

My friend was also talking to me about the problem and said it could probably be Intel Viiv not installed as it doesn't work with Vista 64. Has anyone heard about Viiv? I assume it's not the case as you have the same mobo as me and it doesn't have this issue.

No problem Spoony,

I worked around that issue by temporarily creating another partition using FAT32 instead of NTFS. Qflash can see a FAT32 partition at boot, but not a NTFS one. I put the expanded F7 BIOS download on the partition, then restarted the computer. At bootup I selected the <End> Qflash option. Next, I just select the FAT32 partition to flash. After your done, you can delete the FAT32 partition and extend C: back into it.

I experience the exact same behaviour on my computer when resuming from sleep mode; the computer spins back to life, shuts off again then 3 seconds or so later it spins up again, and repeat until I pull the power or press the powerbutton for several seconds to shut the computer down completely.

I have installed the latest versions of BIOS, chipset drivers and graphic card (NVIDIA) drivers. Have tried the tips in the 'Vista sleep tutorial' but the problem still persists.

I have now disabled both the 'sleep' and 'hybrid sleep' modes and using 'hibernation' mode which (to my surprise) functions without problems. The resume time is however much longer than in 'sleep' mode.

I notice that Chappy is stating this to be a known problem. Hopefully a fix is available soon.

Just so we can compare to everyone else that is having this problem, what sleep state (ACPI mode) in the BIOS are you using? Is it S3?

Yes, the ACPI mode is S3(STR).

To my understanding, the difference between 'sleep' and 'hibernation' is the storage media used; memory vs. harddisk. As long as resume from 'hibernation' functions OK, could this indicate that the drivers and stored data is OK, and being unable to resume from 'sleep' mode might be a hardware or configuration problem ?

I have heard of bad or corrupted video drivers causing problems like this. You might uninstall and reinstall a new driver copy to see if that helps.
