About two days ago I had an error that said Logon failed to create security option or something to that effect, after I left it idle. Now that has happened everytime my computer goes idle for even a little while it completely locks up and I have to press the power button to shut it down. Its the only thing that works. When I start up my computer everything is fine and fast as usual but as soon as I leave it alone for just a bit it freezes completely. Even though I have my screen saver set to none it would always go to an idle screen after about ten minutes of not being used. Is my hard drive dieing, is it my operating system?

My computer knowledge is only basic so I really couldn't figure this out on my own.

I'm running Vista 32bit home premium SP 2.

2. Download and run a full scan using malwarebytes, free version here is the link..

Allowing only my internet adapter and avast to load plus the system files it still froze, it even froze up with nothing but the system files running and while in safe mode I got this error message with a blue screen:


A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated.



I think I copied the numbers down correctly. They were:

Virus scan found three trojans which were removed.
I ran a memory test which came back clean but my hard drive's smart scan reported problems and suggested erasing... is there anyway around this?

SeaTools got as far as scanning for supported drivers and then had this error:

*Edit* Never mind =) Just took a bit of retrying to get it to actually work. Do I run all the tests? I ran the short generic and it passed but, when I tried to run the long test before it could even finish I received the STOP blue screen again and I was in safe mode.

In windows debug the guide tells me that I need to open a dump file but it doesn't tell me where the dump files are. How do I find them to open them in the program?

Perfmon report failed. It gives me an error stating that the system cannot find the path specified.

My sister installed that Daemon crap on my computer a while ago, I thought I removed it completely. I guess I didn't. Windows came already installed on my computer so I'm not sure if I can completely wipe everything but I'll try restoring it to its factory settings. Thanks again.

Okay, I just wiped everything and I still encountered a freeze. Is there anyway to definitely tell if its the hard drive? I ran the company's S M A R T scan, my hard drive is a Samsung HD320kj, and the first time I ran the scan it told me that I should erase the hard drive, I decided not to that right away and ran it again but, second time I ran it it passed. It also passed Seagate's long and short tests. HD Tune found no problems, either.

Another thing I encountered was this error:

The instruction at "hex numbers" referenced memory at "hex numbers". The required data was not placed into memory because of an i/o error status. I missed the numbers as the system restarted soon after that.

As I typed this my comp had been running for a half an hour with no freezing yet. Its really sporadic annd it froze after running for an hour and sixteen minutes.

I don't have a lot of money to toss around so before I go out and buy a new hard drive I really want to be positive it'll fix my problem.


Received another blue screen stating this:

Memtest ran for 8 hours and found no errors. Since I'm terrified at the thought of going into my computer and removing things... I kept all four in there and let it go.. it got up to 5 passes before time to shut the comp down rolled around.

The stress test ran for four hours and found no errors and my temp didn't go above 50C.

I guess that means its my hard drive?
