October updates crippling Outlook 2000

The load of updates listed by Nick earlier this month automatically installed on my Vista desktop and caused my Outlook program to hang every time I tried to use it. I used System Restore to reset the machine to a date before the updates, and all was well. Last night the updates installed again, creating the same problem. What to do?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Welcome back to Vista Forums DrJacqui. Of course the difficult part of your question is which update caused Outlook 2000 to hang. The relative few who are still running Vista are more likely to have Outlook 2007, if they use Outlook at all. I'm afraid you will have to use a process of elimination along the lines of a past post of yours. If you can identify the update, then you simply need to hide it.

Just a stab in the dark: Is Apple iTunes installed on this PC?

Technically office 2000 isn't supported on Vista. Considering it's age I doubt that M$ tests patches on systems running office 2000. Not only has Microsoft discontinued support of that version but the 2 following versions so continuing to use it really isn't that secure. I suggest that you get a newer version or an up to date alternative such as Thunderbird (which is free). As Vistaar said it's a process of elimination to determine the patch.

Hi DrJacqui:

I don't use Outlook 2000, but most MS Office 2000 programs have their own built-in repair tool. Open Outlook and see if you can find the repair tool at Help | Detect and Repair...

EDIT:

... and when you said "updates listed by Nick" are you referring to the thread windows vista october updates by NICK ADSL UK? The image in that thread shows updates for Office 2010 and are not intended for Office 2000. If you are having problems installing updates on your Vista machine please see ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking for the correct list of Windows kernel-mode driver (Win32K.sys) updates that must be installed to speed up Windows Update. Note that this list of Win32K.sys updates will be revised tomorrow (08-Nov-2016) when the November 2016 Patch Tuesday updates are released by Microsoft.

Belated thanks, Vistaar. The problem seems to have ironed itself out. Now MS Essentials is warning me that I'll be unprotected using WinXP. No problem, I'm using Vista! :)

Thanks to townsbg and Imacri, too. I do understand that Vista and Office 2000 are no longer supported. I use Office 2013 on more recent computers I own running Win7 and Win 8.1. Through it all, I prefer Vista and 2000. So much more logical.

Hi DrJacqui:

Just to clarify, MS Office 2000 is no longer supported and reached its end-of-life (EOL) a few years ago, but extended support for Vista SP2 does not end until 11-Apr-2017 (see Microsoft's Windows Lifecycle Fact Sheet) and Microsoft will be releasing security updates for Vista SP2 on Patch Tuesdays (the second Tuesday of each month) for a few more months.

If you're having problem running Windows Update please see post # 485 in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking. There a link in post # 485 for step-by-step instructions on page of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours in the MS Answers forum that might be helpful.
