internet keeps cutting out

first time poster here, so forgive me if this has been answered. i tried to search for my problem, but didn't find anything useful.

just got a new computer HP pavilion p6142p and it is connected to the internet by an encore electronics 802.11g wireless usb adapter to a dynex router which is hardwired to a linksys modem.

my new computer, of course, has vista HPx64 and this is the last thing that i've had to beat into shape.....gotten all the other junk that i hate about vista ironed out, but i am still having problems with the internet.

ISP is comcast (ugh, i know) cable.

my husbands two macs are not affected by the internet trouble, so i know it's something on my end.
though, his computers are hardwired into the router.

mine will just disconnect whenever it feels like it. i did notice that the microwave was shutting it off, so i changed the channel on the router to 6. it seems to help a bit, but just now while typing this, it's gone a couple of times... no microwaves or anything then.

anyone have any ideas? my neighborhood is under some heavy road construction now and i was wondering if anything they might be using could affect my adapter getting its signal.

i assume your losing your wireless signal , how far are you from the router? do you have the latest drivers installed for your wireless card/dongle? does it reconnect automatically? or do you have to do it manually?

i have not moved my computer position from where the old computer was. it is about 10ft away.
everything is in the same position, just new computer and new monitor. alll the network stuff is the same old stuff.

yes, it does reconnect on its own.

and yes, new drivers.

no, as far as i can tell there is no utility. just the driver and the manual on the disk.

i didn't have any problems before with it. my signal strength to the local network is strong.

try giving you Vista machine a permanant IP address and then setting up your router to stop assigning an ip address through the DHCP...you might want to do this to the macs and anything else going through the router.

I had a similar problem where the wireless network adaptor kept dropping the security code evertime the lease expired on the IP address.

Make sure your mac address is enabled on your routers web based page. Just open you browser...IE, firefox and type in 192.168.1.1 or what ever you computer is numbered. Enable it if is not then clone it and save settings then reboot.

If the mac address wasn't enabled the machine wouldn't be able to authenticate, thus no connection... So that is obviously correct.

I was helping a user on this forum diagnose a bluescreen problem and limited connectivity with an encore adapter. I don't think those things are very Vista friendly :(

Go to: Control panel > network and internet > network and sharing center > on the current connection, click 'View status' (towards the middle of the screen) > on the pop up screen choose 'Properties' it will have a shield next to it > Accept the UAC > Scroll down to the IPv4 option, just highlight, choose Properties > if its set to 'Obtain an IP automatically' lets untick that and tick 'Use the following IP Address'.

Now open up the command prompt > start search cmd > hit enter > type the following command in > ipconfig /all > use the following information to fill out the form for the 'Use the following IP address' box: DNS Server, Default Gateway, IP Address, and the subnet mask is always 255.255.255.0

hi, i tried all of this, but for the DNS addresses, it said the device was not connected. so i couldn't fill in that part if i checked to pick my own IP address, etc.... because it switched the DNS addresses to manual as well.
what does that mean? that the device was not connected for the DNS

Can you post the results of the ipconfig /all command here?

Type the following into the command prompt: ipconfig /all > %userprofile%\desktop\ipconfig.txt

Then copy and paste the text file here so I can take a look at it. Try this command after the one above:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

wouldn't let me copy and paste, so here's a screen shot. release said i needed "elevation" and renew had the same info.

I forgot that. Elevation just means it needs to be ran as 'Administrator' so.

Go to start search > type cmd > the icon will appear > right click the icon > choose 'Run as administrator' > accept the UAC prompt > then type ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew

Did you try flushing the DNS?

ipconfig /flushdns

Post back with results :)

Also, whats the model number of the usb adapter were working with? The encore adapter.
