Hi VFN:
Sorry, I've had Windows Defender disabled on my Vista machine for several years so I don't see the definition updates downloaded on a regular basis.
Definition updates for Windows Defender are posted on the Microsoft servers at least once a day. When I first posted earlier today the latest available definition version was
1.225.2465.0, but since then the MS support article
Updating your Microsoft antimalware and antispyware software has already been updated and now states "
For antimalware and antispyware, the latest definitions are 1.225.2505.0, dated Jul 26, 2016 11:9 PM UTC". The Change Log for each new definition update is posted at
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/portal/definitions/whatsnew.aspx.
If I recall correctly, the latest available definition updates should be downloaded when Windows Updates runs if Windows Defender is turned on, so I'm not surprised that you received a definition update today when you ran a manual Windows Update. From the Help section of Windows Defender:
"
To help keep your definitions up to date, Windows Defender works with Windows Update to automatically install new definitions as they are released. You can also set Windows Defender to check online for updated definitions before scanning."
FYI, I did a quick search and it appears that
Avast will automatically turn off Windows Defender on Win 8.x and Win 10, but not on Win 7 and Vista. That's likely because the Win 7 and Vista versions of Windows Defender only scan for spyware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), while the Win 8.x and Win 10 versions of Windows Defender are true antivirus programs that scan for viruses and other high-risk malware in addition to spyware and PUPs - see moderator quietman7's comments in the bleepingcomputer thread
Avast vs Windows Defender.
