I am trying to upgrade to SP2 on a Dell XPS 420 32-bit Win Vista SP1 PC. Although the SP successfully completed the update in Windows Update, the ensuing reboot failed with the following message:
!! 0xc0190036 !! 1721 / 56366 (wmiadap.exe)
Based on my research across various forums, this error indicates that the file identified is corrupt and can not be overwritten during the boot. The OS was pre-installed on the PC and as such I do not have any Win recovery / installation media available.
I have downloaded and run the System Update Readiness tool and it reported a number of missing payload files and one manifest missing, but no package problems. The two log files (CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log) are attached for your review.
I am familiar with the SFC utility, but have held off running it until I am able to resolve these missing files.
