At my wit's end. Cannot find the right answer anywhere. I had to use restore points to get Media Center TV Pack installed on SP1. It is working pretty well. Windows update had lots of problems but finally got SP2 reloaded. Now I'm looking to get Windows Live Family Safety installed, but it requires Platform Update. I read about how this fails because of issues in Update, but the "fixes" don't do any good. I've tried using the FixIt. I've tried installing standalone Update packages, related and unrelated. I've tried the manual fix that edits the registry. I haven't seen any other suggestions, besides start all over with a new install of Vista and try to do it all in sequence the right way the first time. I'm not even sure what that would be anyway and I really don't want to start all over just to get a peripheral bit of software to work. Anyone else find the "magic key" to this problem that is not sharing it out on the Internet?

This is a common error - as far as I know it doesn't cause any problems.

The CheckSUR scan was clear.

However, there are a mass of errors of the following kind in the background CBS.log data....

I think your best bet is going to be a repair install - see the tutorial section for instructions.

I have been having problems with the computer operating properly. Some programs crash and won't die. Some restarts hang and such, but in general it hasn't been that bad. I've had worse problems on Win 7 on another computer.

I am looking at the Repair Install instructions and it seems I need to do the Slipstream Vista SP2 since I only have the SP1 disk. Is this right?

Also, I'm interested in retaining my Windows Media Center TV Pack. This was not on the disk and must be installed on SP1. So I'm guessing all things mentioned in repair are pointless because I still need to do a clean install of SP1. Which is what I was trying to avoid all along.

Well, having said that, I have changed my mind and decided to use my Win 8.1 machine to act as the Media Server, with any luck. So I can go ahead with attempting the Slipstream, but the caution is that it may not work as a Repair Install. So unless there is further advice, I will proceed with this course.

I assume if this doesn't work the next step is to reinstall SP1 and reinstall Standalone SP2. Is that right?

No- You can do a repair using SP2 media...

You'll then have a fully-capable SP2 slipstreamed disk to do the repair install with.

Initially I received a 80070020, but resolved that with turning off all startup programs with msconfig.

As expected the repair install wiped out my Media Center TV Pack, but I'm tired of fighting that battle and it didn't recognize the hybrid signal anyway, I was stuck with only QAM or regular cable but not both like Win 7 does. So I'm shifting that fight over to my 8.1 machine.

I am in the process of loading all the updates since SP2. Is there anything else I need to do after that?

It seems Windows side by side is not happy. There are tons of errors in the log and at least one driver doesn't like this situation at all. Uninstall and reinstall did not stop the winsxs error condition.

I followed the instructions at this site: How to Repair a Side-by-Side Configuration Error | eHow and it worked like a charm...I didn't even have to reboot for my programs and drivers to start working again.

I have run "sfc /scannow" before and after the problems yielding: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".

Is there anything else I should do at this point?

I don't think so - check through the Event Logs, and see if there are any recurrent flags there, but if not, I think you're done.

I'm getting this recurring error:
Failed to load protocol handler Search.MediaCenterHandler.1. Error description: A server error occurred. Check that the server is available. .
I suspect that this is a remnant of Media Center at one time having TV Pack installed and now it being unrecognized because of the repair install. I don't intend to use Media Center for TV any more and may not use it for any of my media either. So unless this is going to cause errors for other parts of the system or slowdowns, I'm not going to worry about it.

Thanks for all your help. I am very glad that I didn't have to start installation from scratch and lose all of my programs and settings.

I doubt it's likely to cause problems - the usual solution would be to try and reinstall it - then immediately uninstall, and see if that cures the problem.

Well, at this point, I am now back to where I started. I had SP2 loaded, but Media Center was incapable of using my QAM service. I used restore points to get back to SP1 and then loaded Media Center TV Pack. Then updated to SP2, but that is where I started this thread because something (apparently a lot of things) were corrupted. So, now I have a good SP2, but a corrupt Media Center. The only solution I know of is to do what I didn't want to do in the first place and start all over with SP1 (clean), load TV Pack, and then update to SP2. As far as I can tell, there is no way to install or uninstall Media Center for Vista Ultimate; it's just part of the software.

I was able to do all kinds of crazy tricks with Windows 7 Media Center and finagle it into working, but apparently Vista is a much less capable setup. So unless someone has a better repair disk with TV Pack included, I guess I'm stuck with what I have or restarting from scratch. Personally, I'd rather just not have Media Center at all, but apparently that is not an option. With Windows 7, it is just a Windows component that can be removed. I only need this computer to limp along with Vista because I need it for work. I'm hoping it will last as it is until I no longer need Vista.

I now see I would have been better off just doing a clean install before starting this thread, but hindsight is 20/20. That is still an option, but I've wasted enough time already.
