Solved Unusual Update

Hi Vista Forums! I'm new here, so, hello all.

I recently did a complete format of my hard disk and re-installed Vista from scratch. I've been having to reinstall all the updates and service packs and such.

Normally when I install updates from Windows Update, and the computer needs to be restarted, I either just click on “Restart Now” on Windows Update, or I just select “Restart” from the Shut Down Menu under the Start Menu. But this time recently, I noticed there was a little button to the left of the Shut Down Menu that said something like “Shut Down and Install Updates.” I figured it was just yet another way of accomplishing the same thing, so I was like, sure what the heck, and I clicked it.

Then my computer did the usual “Configuring Updates… Step 1 of 3” thing, and it said it was restarting, but then, instead of restarting, it just shut down. I was kind of bewildered, I turned it back on, I was like, what the hell is going on here? Then it went to like a black kind of command line-looking screen and was flashing a bunch of text that was going by too fast for me to really read but it looked like the updates it was supposed to be installing… at least I think it did.

So… is this normal behavior for this button, or did I do something wrong?

That's perfectly normal behaviour - the 'Install and shut down' option does exactly that, for those who shut down at the end of their day and/or don't want to hang around and shut down the computer after it's rebooted.

It still has some of the install to do on the reboot - but it can be preferable if you know there's a long install involved.

Ok, thank you so much, NoelDP, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear! Ok, so, everything's fine, then? That black kind of command line-looking screen and the bit with the quickly flashing-by text, that's normal too, you've gotten that?

Hi,

Yes that is normal for an update that needed to continue after a reboot. It finished of what it was doing but on the next boot-up.

Ok, thank you so much, Lottiemansion, I really appreciate it! Good, well, thank you very much for assuaging my concerns. It's just that, for whatever reason, I'd never really noticed that button before, even though I've been using Vista for like five years straight, so, I was a bit put off by that, but, as long as everything's fine, then… everything's fine, lol!
