Solved Vista stuck at windows 95 theme after windows updates

Hi vista forums,
I'm having trouble with my dell latitude d620, which after windows updates, restores to the windows 95 theme, and is really slow.

DWM is running in services.
system restore fixes this, but doing windows updates causes the issue again. Uxtheme is not patched, no 3rd party themes are used

Oh ands it's more like a bland greyish windows 95 theme with thick ugly grey boarders. :sa:

When you select windows aero or windows basic in appearance, it has a blank black preview, and does nothing when apply is pressed (still ugly win95 greyish theme)

Thanks, but the system is the sp2 with NO UPDATES. Soooo, I really want those security patches...

i don't want to fresh install, as I will loose my data, (I don't have a backup, or any way to backup in the future)

Then is seems the alternative is apply the updates one by one until you find the culprit. Unless you can find someone else posting the same issue to save you the leg work.

Was the culprit an update for graphics by any chance? I've seen that sort of thing happen with bad graphics driver updates. Do you have the KB number if it was a regular update?

I tend to install that sort of thing manually rather than let Microsoft do it.
