Yesterday I installed quite a few Windows Updates including Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - July 2013 (KB890830). Here are part of the details I copied from Windows Update History:


"Installation date: ‎7/‎10/‎2013 5:40 PM


Installation status: Successful


Update type: Important"

Today I booted up and Windows Update is asking me to download this Malicious Windows Tool again.

Any thoughts why and how I should proceed?

Look at the download history. If the tool was installation was successful, then right click on the new one and then click on hide.

Thanks. Is there a reason this happens. I've looked elsewhere and it seems a problem many have encountered, not just particular month I should add.

The computers at Microsoft and programmed to send updates to those that need it. For whatever reason MS determined that you did not have the update yet. Just go to update history and make sure that the update numbers are the same for the one you have and the one that you received, a second time. If they are the same and it is marked as a sucessful install, just hide the new one and forget about it.
It happens to me once in a while, too.

Thanks. I actually installed it last night, just booted and the only update prompted today was the usual Friday Defender definition. So I guess there was some kind of glitch.

I installed it twice and it wasn't offered again.

It happened in all my OS's from XP upwards, weird.

I've gotten that twice as well, and the second time was yesterday. What I'm seeing happen is that MS is doing something with the version numbers, they are different. I have a copy of the old Windows 98 System File Checker, which I run whenever something updates. (The Win98 SFC saves a text log of the changes.)

Here's the two update versions:
07-09-13: MRT.exe Updated 4.21.7500.0 6/22/13 4.22.7601.0 7/9/13
07-19-13: MRT.exe Updated 4.22.7601.0 7/9/13 5.2.9201.0 6/24/13

Note the last version jump, 4.22.7601.0 to 5.2.9201.0.
