Windows Updates Fail / Cannot update from IE8 to IE9 / Vista Home Premium 32 bit

HP Pavillion a610a Vista Home Premium 32 bit Intel Core (TM)2 CPU

6 to 9 months ago I found I could not download and run most Windows updates
At one point I did upgrade to IE9 but I returned to IE8
Now my main motivation is to once again upgrade to IE9 which I cannot do. The download stops about halfway thru process.

When the situation is at it's worst, I attempt to download updates and receive codes such as 643 and 8007371c. Some succeed and some do not. When I reboot, the "successful" updates are attempted, then stopped and backed out. The reboot procees will "cycle". I have to use HP rescue "F11" and system restore.

I have tried every suggestion. Some processes I was unable to preform ( for example: command prompt .. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth ( "not recognized" ).

Here is what I have tried ...

Command Prompt ... net stop wuauserv net stop bits net stop cryptsvc ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old ( I was not able to copy the text provided and save as WindowsUpdate.BAT )

CHECKDISK, SFC SCAN AND ChEKSUR

Rename the Pending.xml file ( "cannot find" )

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder

System Update Readiness Tool

FIXIT

Delete incorrect Registry values ... PendingXml Identifier / NextQueueEntryIndex / AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

Register the Windows Update Files

I will check, but I believe I am only using Windows Vista security measures. If I have added, active protection, I need to see that certain files are not scanned. In the directory %windir% \SoftwareDistribution. Exclude Edb*.log Res1.log Res2.log Edb.chk Tmp.edb

Clear the BITS queue of any current jobs

Download and manually install the 958056 update

Clean BOOT and attempt update

I currently have 17 updates that will not take including my attempt to download IE9

Cummulative security IE8 (2)
Security update Net framework (3)
Update for Vista (8)
Update XML Core (3)
Video card driver update (1)

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.


  1. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
  2. Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:

    https://www.dropbox.com/install
  3. After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.

  4. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon

    found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
  5. Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:
    • C:\Windows\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\schema.dat
  6. Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  7. This will create a .zip
    zip_icon.png
    file in your Public folder.
  8. Right-click on this file and select
    icon.jpg
    Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl+V) this link into your next post for me please

I don't want to confuse what I'm asking you to do with the help Tom982 is giving you. What he's seeing may be along the same lines as what the system update readiness tool would resolve.

Since the download is 132 Mb, I don't think you could download it in 10 seconds. I assume you're trying to save it before running it. You might try running it instead of saving it.

Another possibility is to download and install the Windows Installer 4.

I was just guessing on the time it took before I received the error message. The IE9 download stops at a certain point. It does not complete the download. I will try to "save" and run instead of "run" the download. Now that I think of it, I believe I saved the program to run after downloading it before, with no luck. But will try again.

Hi John,

Make sure the zip file is in the Public folder before you attempt to copy the link. When you have done this, the 'Copy public link' should be available.

The SURT failed to install and didn't write a log at all, so we can't see what caused it to fail just yet :( As far as I know, it doesn't scan the schema registry hive either so I don't think it would be able to fix this, even if it did install.
