Vista Updates failing HELP PLEASE

Hi folks,
Am hoping you can help me. I help fix my friend's computer for her grandchildren who live with her. As two are now in high school I really need to get this problem fixed.

Windows Vista has been trying to update since August 2012. All have failed. Have no clue what to do now. The reason I need the upgrade also is because one of the grandchildren uninstalled her computer security program. I am unable to re-install this program until Windows is updated.

I waited three hours for the updates yesterday only to find that they had faiiled again. Have no clue what to do.

Have you checked event viewer? What error messages are you getting?

Thank you for helping me with this. I am a bit of a dummy and a newbie sorry, I do try my best. All I can tell you is that the computer is a Compaq/HP running Windows Vista. I will be bringing my friend's computer to my house tomorrow with the view to running the following in the order below:

(1) System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft Download Centre.

(2) Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility

After this I planned to use Windows auto update again. Didn't write down the error codes but one I get the computer home I may be able to answer you questions. How do I tell if the vista version is 32 or 64 bit?

Once I run the update I can then report on the error codes. If I am doing the wrong thing can you please advise me as to what you would do in this situation.

Have you checked event viewer? What error messages are you getting? Thank you for trying to help me. I have just run the windows auto update yesterday, but did't write down the error codes. I will be bringing my friend's computer to my house tomorrow with a view to run "system update readiness tool" from microsoft first, THEN, repair-fix-windows-updates-with-fix-wu-utility" from Windows 7 | 8 Tips, Features and Downloads | The Windows Club .

After I have done these, my plan is to run Windows auto update again but this time if it fails again, I will write down the error codes and report same on this forum. I am assuming the error codes may be the same as have occurred since August 2012. I have checked the event viewer and as I said every auto update since August 2012 has failed.
I actually own a HP Pavilion G6 with Windows 7 with AMD A6 Vision and Quad Core and Radeon Dual Graphics. After reading some of the posts today am about to check whether my own Windows updates are functioning.

Thank you all for helping me. When I get my friend's computer tomorrow just tell me what you need and how to get it. :confused:

I am currently running a windows update on my own computer to see if this problem affects my computer, all updates successful as 16.3.2013. Thank you all again in advance. The Newbie. xx :confused:

Hi Jayden, thanks for replying. This one is now about my computer. My updates are failing too. I have a Hewlett Packard HP Pavilion G series. I purchased same Feb 2012. I am running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium. My error code is 8024402C. Looked for a Hotfix on Microsoft web site no luck. Am now trying to install System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft. The download was successful but the installation is very slow. Then I'll try updates again. I tried to update today I had 1 critical and 5 optional updates all 6 failed. SO SICK OF IT. Is there a problem at Microsoft? Anyway, would appreciate any help.

Hi again Jayden, I am sorry I talked about my computer I forgot this was a Vista site. Anyway, went to Microsoft's "fix it" area and did checks on two areas and windows resolved any probs. I then downloaded Hotfix KB947821 and hallelujah! All updates have worked.

I have downloaded the appropriate hotfix on my friend's computer and will try to run 7 months of updates tomorrow.

Two questions though:
After updates have downloaded should I turn the modem off?

Hi Townsbg,
Have resolved my Windows 7 update dramas by downloading and installing Hotfix KB947821. Sorry I mentioned that forgot this is a Vista forum. All updates now successful. Have learned more about event viewer thanks to you - thank you very much.

As for my friend I downloaded and installed the appropriate Hotfix for Vista today. Will try to get 7 months of updates tomorrow.

Just two more quick questions:

Do I leave the modem on after the download has finished and the install commences? I can easily tell this on Windows 7 but on Vista I can't work out when download has finished.

My friend has Vista SP1 would I be better off just getting Vista SP2 instead of worrying about updates?

So does the user only have dial up? What would be your purpose for turning off the modem and do you mean for good? As for service pack 2 it should be installed because Microsoft only releases new patches for SP 2. Installing SP 2 would eliminate the need to install any Windows patches that came out between 1 and 2 however it won't cover any released since it came out. Patches and service packs for other software such as .net framework and office would also still have to be installed.

Hi again Townsbg, I found after my Hotfix had finished downloading and began installing the installation was faster when I unplugged my modem. My friend has ADSL but with Vista the Windows Update just says downloading and installing. So I don't know which process is happening. Just thought it might be quicker to turn off the modem. Turns out my friend does have SP2. I had the windows update running for seven hours yesterday and it still hadn't finished before my friend went to bed so she turned it off. She has a 200gb service with her ISP and her download speed is very fast averaging 100 mb per sec. I can only think of two things to do now. Go to earliest restore point which is January 2013 OR reset to factory settings. Sooo frustrating! Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tracey.

I would suugest trying system restore .

If you reset to factory - that will probably include SP1 ( unless it is an old machine and it only came with SP0 ). That would mean a massive amount of updating.

If you do end up needing to reinstall - try using a dvd with SP2 already included - still a lot of updates since then - but nowhere near as bad.

What bit version is your friend using?

Thank you very much for answering. My friend's Vista is 32 bit. As a newbie this is probably a dumb question but could I install my software, HP and Windows 7 on hers and just get rid of Vista. I don't want to do anything that will wreck her computer. I also had a problem with a Norton mirror website about a year ago on my computer. I took my comp to a tecky and he gave me a cd with legal versions of windows 7 etc., and got my sys running again. Would this cd help my friend get windows 7 and get rid of Vista. I do not know if this will work or damage her computer. Geez I am over it. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated. Couldn't find the thumbs up to thank you will keep looking. Cheers, Tracey.

You could probably get win 7 to install.

The problem is it would run for 30 days as a trial.

You need a valid product key for win 7 to activate it.

You can't use your key on two machines.

Best thing is to reinstall vista. A repair install is another option, but you still need the vista install dvd to do that.

Unlees you know someone who has a vista install dvd - only thing I can suggest is to google for vista iso including SP2 .

You would need the 32 bit version. All the install iso have all editions on them - doesn't matter if it says ultimate, or whatever, they are all on there.
