Stuck "Configuring Updates: Stage 3 0f 3"

I have a laptop that will not progress past the "Configuring Updates" screen when rebooted. I have tried all methods that I have found so far regarding this issue. I have tried deleting the pending.xml file, which did not exist, as well as modifying the registry components HLKM\Offline Components\ advancedinstallersneedresolving and pendingxmlidentifie, which both also did not exist. I have even tried deleting the contents of the download folder. I am still stuck. Can anyone please help?

This laptop is running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit.

Also the System Restore option has failed as well as booting into safemode which still takes me to the configuring screen and the last known good configuration options.

Boot into DOS & then run this batch file: -

That will clear the downloaded files & then request them again through the update process.

If a registry key does not exist then you can create it.

My Vista 32 bit machine would not take SP1 no matter what. I did all the stuff. Ran the prep/test/chicken bone tossing programs... tried it like 6 times over several months. The best I got was completed 3rd boot. Then when it came up it said "Service Pack was not installed. Rolling back."

That's enough for me. If you are in this situation I think the alternatives are either get Vista with the SP you want already slipstreamed, or get another OS(e.g. W7.) You can watch the machine boot and roll back until you turn blue. If it ain't gonna' go on it ain't gonna' go on. Plus the more you cascade boots, as you are finding out, the more you can lose ground. Stuff that used to work fine doesn't etc..

Did you use windows update or did you go with the manual download?

Also if the OP is running Vista before SP1 there was an update to fix windows update iirc. That's the first thing I'd try to put on. Also there was a windows installer fix(if not more than one.) I'd try to get those on if nothing else.

Thanks for the loop.bat file, but this did not work to resolve the problem. Any other suggestions?

Yeah, search for an update to fix windows update. I'm not joking. There was one for Vista. You don't give any SP level so everyone is shooting in the dark.

Filling this out, at least partially, will save a lot of time. Another advantage is when posting a new problem, the person answering can just click the My System Specs link in the bottom of your post. No need to search for the information.

If you have multiple systems just indicate that in the System Specs so that we know why many of the fields are blank.
