0x80070490 error, going insane!

Hello and first of all I thank anyone for taking the time to read this post weather it be to possible help of just laugh at my technical incompetence.

I have Vista 32 on a laptop and it seems for the past several years updates have not been getting installed and I have never been able to figure out why, and I have finally had enough.

I have tried everything I can to install this SP1 with no luck. Auto updates doesnt work so I have tried it manualy. Still with error. I have tried the System Update Readiness Tool, different antivirus and malware engines, and anything else I can find on the internet. I just moved and can not find my original Vista instal DVD that I suppose came with the computer so that's out of the question.

Any ideas, anything would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice, but that's not gonna happen. I'm at the point that I'll throw my computer in the river before I put another dime into it. I just went out today and purchased the windows 7 upgrade thinking this would solve my problems and I wouldnt have to take my computer in to a specialist.

But once I began to instal the new 7 it told me it couldn't proceed without Vista being upgraded to at least SP1 and now I'm getting the feeling that Microsoft has just boned me real good.

The 7 upgrade, how does that work ?

It has 2 discs, on for 32bit and one for 64.

"Click Upgrade if you are running Windows Vista to keep your files, programs, and settings and install Windows 7".

But somewhere in that process it tells me I cannot proceed till I have downloaded at least SP1 to Vista.

Maybe someone here will have a workable suggestion for you then, seems like you should be able to perform this upgrade easier than how this is working out .

It is not possible to upgrade from Vista RTM (i.e. pre-SP1) to Windows 7 - although it is possible to do a clean install using the upgrade disk.

Before we do that, though, there are a few other things that we can try to get the system going and get SP1 installed (and SP2!)

You receive a "0x80070490" error code when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates
and run ALL the options in the MATS Fixit tool that you will be offered, then run the CheckSUR tool again, and try Windows Updates. Post your CheckSUR.log file as attachment in your response.

I have already tried those options but just in case I just ran them again in the order you mentioned. But still no luck and I cant seem to find this CheckSUR.log file anywhere.

I could only find a windows update text document.

I appreciate the help by the way,

The CheckSUR log should be in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder - If you haven't enabled viewing of file extensions for all files, then it will simply be call CheckSUR

If you can't find the Logs folder, you will need to enable viewing of Hidden Files and Folders.
In Windows Explorer (Computer), click on Organize, then Folder and Search Options
In the pop-up, click on the View tab, and put a 'blob' in the next to 'Show hidden files,folders, or drives'
You should also UNcheck the 'Hide file extensions for known file types' - Why MS keeps this as the default, I will never understand, as it confuses more people than almost anything I know!

If you can't get Windows Updates, something is blocking them. I would try doing a clean boot.

run msconfig.exe. In the Services tab, checkmark, "hide all ........." and then disable all services. In the Startup tab, just stop all startup items.

Reboot.

Try to run the Windows Updater.

KB978207 seems to be the problem update here - See if you can locate it in Installed Updates, and if so, try uninstalling it.

Is this something that should be on my computer, as I have gone to windows updates and looked through all the installed updates and its not there as well as just doing a simple search of the C: drive for that number yielding no results.

It's an Update for IE - MS10-002: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
If you still have IE8 installed, then it should be present (I think, anyhow) - or at least the files shouldn't be showing in the CheckSUR log as being missing.
What happens if you do a check for updates? does it actually complete at all?

It seems I have IE7 still, though I hardly use....
When checking for all windows updates? It says there are 21 updates that need to be installed, 18 for Vista, 2 for Office '07, and 1 for some visual studios. I click download and install and all looks well till the end and then a error prompt pops up giving the same 80070490 error.

Looking over the past installed updates it looks like my computers never had any security or vista related updates. I received my computer in another country in 2007 where it had no internet connection for over a year and it wasn't until I returned to the states that the pc saw internet for the first time.

There are 42 microsoft office updates, 1 works, 1 silverlight, 4 .Net framework's, and 1 CAPICOM updates. And 1 Windows update that was installed yesterday KB937954 through all this troubleshooting.
