Solved Vista SP2 Install Problem - Error Code 8007000D

Good Evening,

I wondered if someone could advise me - I am having problems installing Windows Vista SP2 (32bit) on my laptop.

The laptop was given to me by a friend as they no longer needed it, I did a factory restore and understandably once it was connected to the internet several updates were required.

Eventually I received notification that the SP2 update was required. I used Windows Update and after downloading it I got the message to say it had failed with an Error Code 8007000D. I know that several Vista users have had this same error and after Googling it to death I am now stuck with SP1.

I have disabled my Comodo Firewall, AVAST Antivirus and downloaded the standalone SP2 installer but it still gave me the error.

I have also run the System Update Readiness Tool but after checking the respective log files they show no errors.

Like others I have also tried installing SP2 in Safe Mode, every method I choose seems to give me the same error message. I have re-downloaded the standalone installer and that didn't work, plus I have deleted all items in the download and event cache folders in Software Distribution and used Windows Update to install it again, that didn't work either.

Right now I am at my wits end and cannot install SP2.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I could try?

Generally, these errors can occur if the system files are corrupted. Lets try SFC from command prompt first. see if you have registry errors that can be repaired. Use this, one user in this forum recommends running the SFC scannow 3 times, then use the how to repair the missing/corrupt registry entries. Give this a shot and post back . How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Hi,

Yes I downloaded the standalone Vista SP2 (KB948465) from that link and that failed, it also failed from the automatic Windows Updates.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have run SFC and after verification got the message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"

I read through the link you provided and am now unsure what I need to do to 'fix the errors' that SFC has identified. The CBS.log file is over 15Mb in size and whilst I am quite IT-literate it doesn't mean much to me to work out what I need to do next. I assume somehow I have to identify the problematic files and then replace them from somewhere, this concerns me as I do not have a Vista original disk, the laptop was given to me by a neighbour and all I have done is a Factory Restore and received all available updates that were required.

If the System File Checker tool cannot repair a file, follow these steps:

At an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
takeown /f Path_And_File_Name
For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER to grant administrators full access to the file:
icacls Path_And_File_Name /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F
For example, type icacls E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll /grant administrators:F.
Type the following command to replace the file with a known good copy of the file:
Copy Path_And_File_Name_Of_Source_File Path_And_File_Name_Of_Destination
For example, type copy E:\temp\jscript.dll E:\windows\system32\jscript.dll.

This is the tricky part, the instructions give you an example of the format requested to use in command prompt to get the good file and then to replace the bad file. If you are unable to get a good copy of the file, then the next step would be to get from your computer manufacture a dvd to use to repair files that are corrupted, Usually bout 25 to 40 bucks for the disk.

Thanks for this, I saw the same information at the bottom of the MS page regarding SFC and at first it confused me, but then I realised that it was a case of identifying a bad file (reported in CBS.log) and replacing it with a good copy. After opening CBS.log I have pages and pages of information which means nothing to me, it would have been great if it said something like "Error in file xxx", then I would have know what file required replacing. However it seems I am still going to have to buy a copy of Windows Vista in order to copy any good files across, I doubt contacting Dell (the manufacturer of my laptop) will help, as the laptop was given to me by a neighbour, and is approx 5 years old anyway.

Of course I could post the SFC results here but doubt moderators would appreciate it.

Right now it seems I will be stuck with SP1

Usually , this shows the bad ones and they are at bottom of the page. Can you post back if you did this step .

I followed the instructions at the bottom of the MS page on SFC that you posted previously (How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7) however the command prompt window just sat there and did not produce the results as expected. Anyway (and sorry if I am confusing you) I gather the cbs.log file is exactly the same as sfcdetails.txt? If this is the case I have studied the cbs.log file as I mentioned earlier and it does not show me any obvious "file error" message, just lots of lines of text that I do not understand, for example here is the last few lines:-

Okay, just making sure. Go ahead and get yourself a disk to use for a repair of the OS . If you have to buy a whole new one versus a OEM type, then of course do so. At least we know what was causing the errors on you getting the SP2 update.

Yeah I must admit that I think the only way I can resolve this whole issue is to obtain a Vista disk. What I cannot understand though is how to identify from the log exactly which files are corrupt. Like I said the pages and pages of information mean nothing to me and I cannot identify any corrupt files. Someone who is more confident in the use of SFC might be able to pinpoint them, but I cannot.

The one search term i posted. It tells you which files were not repaired, i have some bad ones. but they deal with the Vista sidebar gadgets, and they are at bottom of that page, and further research showed the MS is aware of the sidebar issue. so.. no biggie for me. However, for you not to be able to install the SP2 is serious enough to warrant action on your part to fix this. From your posting, seems as if you are flat out missing some files .

Sorry Yard Dog I don't understand when you say the one search term I posted?

I will continue to search for a cheap Vista disk online (I have my keycode on the underside of my laptop so no problem there). I might also read up on SFC so I can understand it better, I am not going to give up on this one, and as you say not being able to install SP2 is serious to me, if it were a minor issue I wouldn't bother. After all MS stopped supporting Vista SP1 several months ago!

Yes, thanks.

Method 1 identified that SP2 was ready for download and install via the Automatic Updates feature, that one failed with Error Code 8007000D.

Method 2 was pointless as Automatic Updates had already identified SP2 as being ready to download (see Method 1).

Method 3 was then used, i.e. download the standalone SP2 installer, however that failed giving the same error code.

I have just bought an original Vista Upgrade/Repair disk off Ebay so hopefully that will help me sort my problems out to enable me to install SP2 correctly......eventually!

Well I cannot believe that after all the messing around I have renamed the Software Distribution folder and re-booted the laptop. I de-activated my AV and Firewall and checked for new updates, after quite a while SP2 installed correctly! Bizarre! After several reboots the laptop has since identified 32 updates required, so I think I am actually getting there.

I will, however, run SFC again at some stage and repair any corrupt files to keep my system clean.
