Solved Vista 32 bit Service Pack two will not install - error code 80070570

I am running Vista Home premium 32 bit and having huge trouble getting Service Pack 2 to install . I'm getting error code 80070570 ( File or directory is corrupted and unreadable )
　
　
So far I have tried

* Update from Window update ( get error code )

* Disabling antivirus and firewalls and trying it again ( still switched off and no joy)

* Switching windows automatic update off ( still get error code )
* Updating from the Standalone Pack ( get error code )
( and I have checked its the correct one for 32 bit )

* Running the System Update Readiness Tool ( was also getting an error code on this but I ran it in a clean boot and it installed but SP2 still wouldn't install afterwards

* Deleting the content of Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download File. I have also tried renaming this file I taking ownership ( I now have ownership and have full control according to the properties) and following every tutorial I can then it just will not let me rename it ( Destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this operation )

* I've tried saving the SP2 file to the desktop and running it after a clean boot and also in safe mode - same error

My main Vista screen shows I have 1 GB of RAM if that affects it any
　
I've been pulling my hair out for 10 days now - has anyone see anything else I could do !!

Try deleting "cd2b15b1a90e884578188440a1660b12" directory in c\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\
Once done Restart the computer and try installing Service Pack 2.

Before deleting it you need to take ownership of the Software Distribution Folder
To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
  3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
  4. In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
  5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?
    All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.

    Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
  6. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

Follow the steps below: This might work

1. Let's click on "Start", type "msconfig" in the Start Search box, and then press enter.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
2. This will open System Configuration window.
In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click "Selective Startup" on the General tab.

3. Click to clear the "Load Startup Items" check box.
4. Now, lets click on the "Services" tab.

5. Click to select the "Hide All Microsoft Services" check box on the left side bottom.
6. Click "Disable All" on the right side,
7. When you are prompted, click Restart. Now click on Apply > Ok > Restart


Once restarted, download the standalone package for servica pack from Microsoft Download center. And then install it.

Did you try these steps

1. Disable UAC.
2. Perform Clean Boot.
3. Delete temporary files and folders in "%temp%", "temp", "prefetch" folders.
4. Perform Disk Cleanup.

Rajibroy - quick question . I'm going to try your suggestion in a bit once I've done some work and I don't need the computer )
Do I specifically need to download SP2 standalone file again after doing the msconfig stuff or can I just use the copy I've downloaded to the desktop already

The main pain in the bum about the SP2 problem is it takes so flipping long to run the install then I'm spending an hour minimum each time I try a new fix. Grrrr

Well, the possibility will be more if you download the standalone from the microsoft website first. However you can try through windows update as well.
Or you can download the standalone first
-and then restart your computer ,
-while restarting keet tapping F8.
-Select the safe mode from advanced boot manu.
-Once loaded to desktop, try installing the servica pack 2.

Do you have Vista Installation disk with you? If yes, then we can perform a In-Place Upgrade, in this type of upgrade you will not loose any data however your computer will be like a new one.

Once it's done, try installing SP2. I am sure that it will get installed.

Jups - just tried reseting the windows update componants - same error message

Rajibroy - I've dug out the disks I got when I bought the laptop. I seem to have three
1) Drivers and Utilities for Consumer Notebook
2) Operating system Recovery DVD for Vista Home Premium
3) Win DVD 8.0 FSC

I'm assuming its disknumber two but I've just googled "inplace upgrade" vista and seem to be finding information either saying it can't be done , or I will need to upgrade to Windows 7 or that I will loose all my files and data

Have you got any type of link to a step by step article or anything as all my business accounts , customer details , business menus and everything are on this laptop and it would be disasterous to lose them

**EDIT *** I've just googled what a vista installation disk looks like and I don't think I have one . Should I have had one when I bought the laptop or would it be normal to come preinstalled ?? I bought it from PC World I think

Well, there are two types of Laptops available in todays market.
1. Retail version, where you will get a Vista Installation Disc .
2 OEM version, where you wont get the Vista Installation Disc.

You can check wheather you got a OEM or a RETAIL version using steps below:

-Start
-Right Click on Computer
-Click on Properties
-Check for the Product key.
-If OEM mention over there, then it's a OEM computer.

In that case,
-Take a full data back up of your computer.
-Once done, install the SP1 first and the SP2.

I am sure it will work, but a bit long process. :sarc::roflmao: :zip:

I'm a little unclear though : once I've taken a data backup do I use the operating system restore disk or not ??

Apologies if thats a silly question - I'm on my way out the door to work and haven't googled around the data backup thing yet !

You have to do the factory restore from your recovery disc. through WINRE Mode.

But how would I put my backed up files back on as vista home premium doesn't have the backup and restore facility ? Can you tell I'm nervous now about it lol

Ohh GRrrr

When I start the backup process it stops and I get an error message saying
The disk c: thas errors
Windows has detected file system corruption on C:
You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored

I then schedule the disk check to run upon opening , restart and I'm still getting the corrupted error message

I'm uploading a full backup copy to Live Drive now - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I just wanted to pop in and update and mark this thread as solved as my initial query was solved even though its thrown up a few issue

In the end I ran the seagate tools scan as Rich suggested and the smart and generic tests passed but the DST short scan showed as fail . Even though I've had no problems apart from the fact SP2 wouldn't install its good to have had the heads up the machine is on the way out. Its a 3 year old Amilo 1718 so I'm going to wait until it conks out then splash the cash on something more current. In the mean time the warning of the HDD problems means I've got all my files backing up hourly to an online storage so my work is safe so thank you Rich

Raj - after backing up I ran the winre disk . I'm not sure if I did it wrong but the whole machine got wiped but after two days of installing update after update after update then I finally got the the point where I Have SP2 plus IE9 installed which was my initial problem so SOLVED and thank you for your help

As an aside I HATE IE9 and am jumping ship to firefox but thats another story
