SP1 nightmare

Hi,

Updated my Vista laptop with SP1 yesterday (as recommended by Windows Updates) and it's been an absolute ache.

Took a good 20 minutes to download the update, then the system rebooted.

After it had installed the updates (3/3) I got a black screen with a load of numbers counting up. It got stuck on something like 24,452/86,934 for about 30 minutes. Then the screen went completely black for about 2 hours. When I tried to turn on this morning, same black screen and the CPU light flashing like mad.

Any ideas what has caused this to happen? I'm not even sure I can do a system restore at this point either.

Help would be much appreciated (before my laptop meets the pavement).

Boot Into Safe Mode

1. Turn on your computer and on the BIOS screen (usually has the manufacturer’s logo on it) press F8
2. Using the arrow keys, select Safe Mode and press enter

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately no, it didn't. I actually had to reinstall Vista in the end... :party:

I've since managed to install SP1 on my new installation.

SP1? How about SP2? Microsoft no longer supports SP1 as of July 12 this year so you have a lot of catching up to do. Hint: always disable any running tasks and your antivirus when installing a service pack.

Also note that Microsoft provides free Tech Support for all updates and service pack installations.
