Upgrade Advisor Vista to 7 error

I have run Upgrade Advisor on my Vista 32bit Home Premium SP2 several times and get the error:

X We had a problem checking your system for compatibility. It does look at a variety of programs and advises on compatibility, but does not give me a go ahead for the OS itself.

How do I get past this? May I assume that I can upgrade to Windows 7 Professional or should I buy a new installation ($100 more)?

Welcome to Vista Forums!

The Upgrade Advisor does not advise as to whether or not you can upgrade per se, but whether or not you can install Windows 7 AT ALL on the computer (as an upgrade or as a new installation). I recommend you download it again and save it to the desktop and right click on it and click on run as administrator. Make sure you get it from here: Free Download PC Upgrade Advisor Windows 7 Hardware Programs Issues. If you still can't get it to work even in compatibility mode, then you may need to check the components and software individually: Windows 7 Compatibility: Software Programs & Hardware Devices: Find Updates, Drivers, & Downloads (or check with the manufacturer who can probably tell you if it is possible).

You can buy the upgrade version, but whether you can actually upgrade or need to do a clean install depends on the upgrade path. Windows 7 Upgrade Paths. If you can upgrade, follow the procedures. If you can't you can still use the upgrade version to do a clean install with Windows 7 Upgrade Paths.

I uninstalled the Advisor and reinstalled it, ran it as Admin and got the same error. I had run this program 6 mo ago and it did show compatibility was fine. However, Vista continues to be flaky (restart often does not find the Desktop and only does it after 6 restarts, along with not being able to create a Manual Restore Point, gets me worried). Of course, it is because it is flaky that it may not complete the Advisor program. I do get reports on the software components, but not the OS, which is the main thing.

The OS is not the main thing. Check the upgrade path link again. You can't do an official "upgrade" from Vista Home Premium to W7 Pro anyway - so you're going to have to do a clean install and the status of the OS makes no difference as it will be wiped by that process and you'll be starting clean. The main thing is whether or not the hardware components are compatible (software can always be not installed but hardware would need to be replaced).

You can try doing it manually (I gave you the link and you can contact the individual manufacturers if necessary if it's not on the list) or contact the computer manufacturer and ask them if it is fully compatible with Windows 7 - they should know (or you can bite the bullet and buy it and hope that the test you ran months ago remains accurate and it works - because you probably will not be able to return or get a refund on the purchase no matter the reason except for a defective disk in which case they'll replace it but not allow a return or refund).

You can also try running the Upgrade Advisor program in Safe Mode, but I'm not sure that will work and, if it does, it will fully test everything as not everything is turned on when running in safe mode - but it may be worth a shot just to see what happens.

I know nothing else to try. That's the only program that does what it does and if you can't get it to work and you've tried several downloads and installations as recommended above, then I don't know what else to suggest. Personally, I would contact the computer manufacturer because I'm fairly certain they will know (it may even be posted on their website if you look for your computer there - some even allow you to see your specific computer based on serial number or service tag number). I was able to find this out that way for my Dell E1705 (which can't handle W7).

The decision and the risk (and, if applicable, the extensive manual verification effort) is yours.

Thank you for the kind words. It was my pleasure - I'm glad to be able to help. And if you knew me better, you'd know that long, full, and complete answers are sort of my trademark - LOL!!

I wish you luck with HP - they really should be able to not only tell you if your system can or can't handle W7, but if not, they should be able to tell you the specific components that are the problems (so you can decide if replacement is a viable option). With Dell, I learned that I needed to replace the motherboard, the video card, and the processor - making it totally out of the question. I honestly don't know if HP works like Dell, but for your sake I hope so. And if the first person says it can't be done, ask for a supervisor and keep climbing the management chain as far as you can go or until you get the answers you need (but hopefully it will be possible).

Remember, if it isn't compatible, they may have an opportunity to sell you another computer (or at least some parts) and if it is, they can possibly sell you W7 - so it's in their best interests to know these things (and it may not hurt to remind them of that - especially if you need to climb the management chain and get to speak with someone with authority).
