Updates KB973565 & KB974318 failed w/two errors

The errors are 80073712 and 80070020.

I have cleared DataStore and Download each time I've tried to update. I have also run sfc /scannow various times with no errors. I have restarted in between each attempt. I also downloaded and installed (seemingly successfully) the System Update Readiness Tool but it doesn't seem to make any difference when I update. Is there something else I need to try? Should I just ignore/hide this update like all the windows mail junk filter updates? Please help.

Yeah, that does help thanks! I can just "hide" it now since I know it's not for Vista anyways. That means there's another problem though... why would windows update be telling me I need an XP update when I'm running Vista? :sarc:

Edit: For future reference "resident protection" is permanently disabled so I am always in admin mode. Thanks again.

Edit #2: I checked your link for the Vista update and it says it's for Vista x86... so I guess that's another thing to add to the "Why would windows update think I need this on 64 bit Vista?" question.

Hi Jimbo, that explains why they wont install but it doesn't explain why Windows update is downloading them. I might see if anyone else has an answer?

Here's something else I find interesting; those updates are for sure not for windows vista x64 and yet it describes them as such (see below).

Could you please press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue. Type winver and press enter. Please can you provide a screenshot?

Now please open the Run dialogue again, and type msinfo32. Can you provide a screenshot?

One more thing. Please open the Run dialogue again, type regedit and press enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ and single click on Current Version.

Please expand the window so all is visible and post a screenshot. Thanks!

Those all look fine which makes this even stranger. I will come back on what to do in a few minutes.

I would run Flavius's general Windows Update post to see if it sheds any light. NOTE: I have modified out the bits that are not applicable to you.

2.Reset WU modules Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

I did both options and re-ran windows update. It still insists I need these updates so do you want me to "pack all files from C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder and attach to post" or just "hide and forget"? Cause that would be pretty easy too lol.

It is your choice. If I were you, I would just hide it, however, if you want, you can upload those files, they may help, but I really doubt it.

Alright, I hid the updates and here are the log files. It gave me a warning that CBS.log was in use when 7zip was trying to add it to the zip file. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it is being used legitimately but I figured I would see what everyone else thinks. (I copied the CBS.log file and zipped the copy, so I was still able to get it)

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, and thanks very much for the +rep. There is nothing out of place in those logs at all, Windows Update or otherwise. You may now delete those files, though there is nothing personal in them. I think this is one of those quirks to just forget about, I cannot work out why it is happening. This is a very rare problem, but not completely unheard of (Quote from Mitchell)

I found a similar case but no answer where a guy with Windows Seven had Windows Update trying to download & install an XP security update for IE6. I think it is one for Microsoft to sort out ?????

Sorry we didn't find an answer to why this is happening :( but i assure you we will be keeping an eye out as we to would like to know to.

I had a similar problem updated failed repeatedly for about the last 10 update attempts I searched the KB and downloaded and installed directly from MS this fixed my issue.
