Solved Space on my computer being eaten up

I hope someone can help me. Ever since the latest service pack update, something is eating up the space on my computer and I didn't have that problem before that update. Right after the service pack downloaded on my computer, for some reason, it appeared that I had even more space than before that update. Of course, that excited me. But, ever since that update, as I said, something is eating up space on my computer. I have not downloaded anything new nor done anything that I don't usually do. But every time I turn my computer on, it seems I find a smaller number than when I turned it off. But even while I'm on it, it seems something is eating up the space.

I have cleared my internet caches as I know that seems to take up space at times. I do scans and everything and clear anything that isn't wanted.

As I said, I did not have that problem before the latest service pack update. Can someone please help me? I waited too long to get this laptop and I don't want anything to happen to it.

And just in case anyone wants to know, no, I do not have any manuals or CDs that came with it when it was bought. My friend sold it to me after she bought a new one.

Hello Jeannie,

I'm assuming this is for the SP2. If so, then run the SP2 Cleanup Tool to get back a nice junk of free space.

Another issue may be restore points being created. Anytime a Windows Update is installed like the SP2, a restore point is created. Depending on what you maximum disk storage size for restore points is set as, this can add up. I would say that your average restore point can take 1 to 2 GB. You can use the tutorial below to set the maximum disk storage size that you want to be used for storing restore points instead. It's up to you, but I would go with around 10GB to keep a few restore points hand in case you may need them to do a System Restore with.

Thanks, Shawn. The cleanup tool did give me some space back.

However, I'm confused on the System Restore Disk Space instructions:

I got through step one, no problem. But, on step two, I'm confused on what to type to change the size. I see where it says For the Listed C: drive:
Maybe I'm nuts, but I can't see clearly what to type in the command prompt after
C:\Windows\system32>

Can you clear that up for me? I guess I wanna be sure I don't put spaces in the wrong place and that I put everything where it is supposed to be. Thanks in advance.

Jeanniefan,

You would type what is in bold in that step, but adjust the 3GB part to the size you want instead:

vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=3GB

Say you wanted 10GB instead, you would type:

vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=10GB
