I would think it tries again next time it checks for updates. It may be dependent on the reason it failed too. If it turned out the update was not applicable to your system, e.g. a driver older than your current, or if a later update contained the failed one too, I would hope it did not try again.

There are many reasons why an update doesn't install but as some virus infections disable or interfere with update, I always recommend a complete virus scan after a failure.

As UKMedia has mentioned, updates can fail for a fair few reasons... Its usually caused by some updates having a dependency on an update you just installed, if you reboot and install the updates that failed then they will install successfully
