October updates from microsoft update

i have just installed the latest updates from microsoft, and i restarted the computer. it displayed the manufacturer screen, and then the vista loading window witht the green loading box at the bottom, but as soon as it has finished loading, inbetween the loading window and the loggon screen with the password box. the screen goes blank for about 7 seconds in performance mode (power supply). which it did not do before i updated...

so i restarted again, thinking that is was just because i had recently installed them... but after second boot-up it done the same thing...

I've had similar issues since installing the abovementioned patches - starting up after restart has had some strange behaviours like long loading times on a blank screen, and during the first restart after the installation it actually got part way through startup and threw up some message about the registry and restarted.. since then I haven't een that message again.

BUT, since this I also haven't been able to get internet connection at all, using either LAN cable or wireless. I've rebooted many times, and at the time of doing the updates i had been using a LAN cable with no issues before all this. Just got home and same behaviour on wireless - i seem to be connected "locally" but internet wont work, and pinging the gateway or anything else returns "General Failure".

I tried uninstalling the 5 Vista-specific patches (ie, the ones not mentioning office, etc) and made no difference. I'm loathe to uninstall ALL the other patches because I don't know which one is causing this.

Anyone else had this and been able to fix it?

You should try leaving it running on the blank screen for longer as it may well be updating the system for the new updates. It quite often does it on my machine and after a while it continues to boot.

In my case, I did wait until it did everything and finally booted (after the system-triggered restart that i mentioned).

I've got half way through uninstalling all today's updates -- all the Vista ones are gone and half the Office 2007 ones are gone, still no luck. Tried starting in Safe Mode with Networking and still no networking...

OK my issue is resolved. Once when I tried to repair the internet connection by clicking on teh "X" in Network and Sharing, it came up with a suggestion about SymNetDrv firewall filter OUTBOUND_TRANSPORT_V4). This suggested a Norton 360 potential issue... then I stumbled across a post about a similar issue, and someone mentioned PC Anywhere uninstall causing this.... guess what.... yep, earlier today I had installed PC Anywhere, then uninstalled it again and hadn't happened to reboot until I also ran the Windows Updates.

So for me it was a case of "barking up the wrong tree" with my assumption that the Windows Updates had caused the problem. A Symantec program caused issues with one of their own other programs... nice one.

I ended up having to uninstall Norton 360 altogether (using the Norton Removal Tool) because apparently it had become corrupted thanks to PC Anywhere, had to uninstall and reinstall my network card drivers, and bob's your uncle... I've never been so happy to see a little picture of a world in my system tray!

And since I was already contemplating switching from Norton to another provider, because of suspicions that it was also affecting perforamnce of my Visual Studio 2008, I will definately be making the jump AWAY from Norton now!

No problems with the updates on my machine. Have you tried a 'System Restore'?
A couple of things to check. Enter your firewall configuration page and check the entries for 'WinMail.exe' and 'iexplore.exe'. They should both be set to 'Allow' or 'Auto' (you might need to restart your PC after changing these). Another thing - has Microsoft updated your network adapter driver? If so, you might try reverting back to the previous driver to see if that helps - see the following Tutorial for details on how to do this: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/165382-device-manager-roll-back-driver.html This uses 'Display adapters' for its example, but you will need to select 'Network adapters' instead.

I Use the AVG Pro the latests Version it works faster on the Boot up Norton 360 is a Hogg resource don't know wny people continue to use I returned that with in the first three days will a Nice Nasty Letter and all the problems iit caused with error codes.
