Update = BSOD

I'll be short. There is a windows update/patch causing my system to fart out during boot and present me with a ribbon tied BSOD. I've tried unchecking updates, installing only important updates, and several system resores later, same thing. Update, BSOD. Restore. Update, BSOD. Reinstall Vista, update, BSOD. Which update is causing my problems? What am I to do? Completely disable updates???? :mad: This is ridiculous. :sarc: Anybody else having this trouble?

Hi, DesoShade, and welcome to the forums.

Knowing what the BSOD actually says as well as knowing *which* update it is would go a *long* way in helping us help you. Why not just ignore that update for the time being so you can continue to use your system until you can figure out *why* it is happening?

Hi DesoShade,

If you know the BSOD code I can lookup the exact cause and resolution ;)

I don't get a chance to see the code. Flashes for 1/10th a second and restarts. I could probably try to disable the computer from automatically restarting on errors. hmm. why didn't I think of that before.... that will give me a change to see the code... I'll try that. :p Ok. I just went to system protection and disable auto restart on system failure. I'll try to get that code.

no .dmp file created. I couldn't find any info on the above code

Ha. I believe I've found the culprit. It appears as though my system does not like:
NVIDIA Corporation driver update for NVIDIA nForce(tm) RAID Class Device released 7/12/2007

chances are hardware updates found through Windows Update are going to be a touch riskier than updating from the hardware manufacturer's latest releases. You're using an onboard drive controller, so just go to your motherboard manufacturer's support site and see what the latest drivers they have are. If they have newer drivers that what you are using, then Windows Update won't refer to it again... Otherwise just hide that single update.

Great thread guys. I have a similar issue, and interestingly it is on my 64 Vista machine. There were some updates in the past two days, and one or all are causing the system to hibernate if it sits for even ten seconds. My decision was to roll it back, and try to narrow out which update it did not like, and I accidentily had auto update engaged. My mobo is a 680i Nvidia and a Q6600 cpu. I believe my issue may be similar to DesoShades. Any thoughts? Thanks guys

No offense, but it is hard to have thoughts without first knowing which updates were installed.

Have you also reset your power plan to see if that has any effect?

So far my pc seems to be running fine. I installed all updates except the nvidia raid and hard drive controller related updates, and works like a charm. Seems like there are quite a few people having trouble with some of the later updates. It's difficult trying to find out which updates are causing the issue. In my case, it was just luck.

My Computer

Yeah, if Windows Update offers you 'updates' for your device drivers, I would ignore them - it usually wants to install older updates that aren't optimized as the newer drivers from the manufacturer's website(s) are.
