How do I put a caption on a pic in Windows Live Photo Gallery?

My question here is so darn elementary that it 'says something' about ME, the simple-minded user, OR about the software!

I am a new user of Windows Live Photo Gallery. I am trying to learn it so I can help my good friend who is dependent on it.

It seems like a simple proposition to add captions to pictures. I do it regularly in MY preferred photo gallery, which is SmugMug. I also find it easy to caption pictures in the Kodak Gallery, in the Shutterfly Gallery, and in Picasa. BUT, in Windows Live Photo Gallery, it is a problem. Finding the place in the program for entering captions is easy as pie. Only problem is, the caption data so entered does NOT show up when the pics are displayed!

Can someone tell me what, where, and how to make my captions appear?

You need to change your display view to "Thumbnails with Captions".

If the captions still do not update, then it maybe that the files are marked Read Only.

Thanks for that tip about using thumbnail view with captions. I did that, and yes, while the thumbnails are being viewed with captions, the captions are shown beside the individual thumbnail. But that is not why I or most people want to have captions for their pics. I want the captions to show when I show my pictues in SLIDESHOW mode. That is really where galleries shine! They make it possible to show many pictures with a minimum of effort, and give the pictures a full-screen presentation WITH identifying CAPTIONS!

My pictures are not "Read Only" files either. I checked that setting. So my problem remains, HOW to add captions to my individual pictures such that the captions appear under or on or near the pictures when they are being shown in SLIDESHOW mode.

G'Day Scooter,

You should have a Photo Edit Program called 'Paint' as a part of your Vista installation. All you need to do then is Right Click on a Thumbnail in Windows Live Photo Gallery, Select 'Go To' option of Paint, when it opens, do your editing by adding text to the Photo.

Here's a quickie I did as an example for you;

Mother Earth on Hand.jpg

After editing and saving [File], gather all together in a new Folder eg. Captioned Photos, and run you slide-show from there.

Cheers Mate, and good luck.

Edit; I hope that your friend's system is Vista, and has Paint. I know nothing of the XP system Photo Edit capabilities. Sorry.

Thanks very much for this tip! I don't have Vista on my computer. I have Windows XP, to which I added a free download of Windows Live Photo Gallery. It doesn't look like this option you so nicely found and described for me, is available to ME. But the good news is, my friend who is the one who is wanting to add captions DOES HAVE Vista. So I will very happily pass this useful tip which you have given here to my friend!

Thanks again (scooter78666)

G'Day scooter 78666,

Hey! Kinda thought that might be the case. Oh well......your loss :( . It is so simple.
I hope that your friend gets some real use out of it. Why not suggest that they join Vista Forums? There's always someone ready to help, and not just in his field.

I too have a Scooter, but it is a 'TGB 203', Piaggio developed, but manufactured in Taiwan. It's really, really mean on fuel......Gas woes? What woes?? Because other brothers have Harley's, BSA 'Gold Flash', Ducatti, Honda 'Gold Wing', Royal Enfield....I am made to refer to my beast as the 'Harley-Piaggio'......Scooter? Blah!! They're just green that I can do about 100 miles for under $2.50.

All the best.

Dear sassofalco,

I like your helpful attitude and suggestions! It comes as no surprise to me that you are also a fellow 'cyclist'! It is nice to know that. It may be bordering on non-conforming message content for me to expore and expand on our mutual 'scootering' interests here in this forum. I know some forums are tougher on this issue than others. Lest it be a negative for people on this forum, I will send you a Private Message, so we can share more information about 'scootering'.

Thanks so very much for your help and insights on the captioning question!
