Hi, I have two user accounts used by my wife and myself and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) works fine on both user accounts. Very occasionally our daughters visit and use our pc. They use the Guest account. I just happened to log into the Guest account and got a pop up message saying that Microsoft Security Client User Interface has stopped working. When I closed the message I noticed that the MSE icon was missing from the Notification Area. When I tried to open MSE from the Start Menu I just got the pop up message again and MSE would not open.
I would add that I have no other anti-virus software running on my pc apart from MSE.
I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me
Welcome
You can try one of two things:
With system restore go back to when it was working http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html
If that does not help
Uninstall and then install again.
Befoe trying the above, download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.
Thanks Richard. I am reluctant to do a system restore or uninstall MSE as MSE is working okay in all the other accounts. I have disabled the Guest account for now and created a new standard user account called "Visitor." I have found that MSE is working okay in that account. I will certainly run a full scan as per your suggestion.
The Guest account is turned off for a reason, you should not have enabled it in the first place - it's a security risk as it allows anonymous access to your machine. If you want to enable casual access to your machine then create a Standard User account and call it "Visitor" or something similar.
I often wonder why Microsoft still include it in their OS's. I suppose it could provide a last resort access to the machine.
