Solved Another Windows Defender issue...

A dialog saying that Windows Defender is turned off, and the computer won't be protected, shows up every time the computer is started.

Microsoft Security Essentials is installed on this Vista Home Premium , so, Windows Defender should be automatically turned off by it.

Disabled the WD service settings, but the dialog mentioned above still shows up. Also, uninstalled and reinstalled MSE, but, the dialog box still shows.

In the Windows Security Center, clicked on “Change the way Security Center alerts me”, and the option: “Don’t notify me, but display the icon”

How can the dialog be stopped from showing???

The first thing that I would try is to go to search
type
misconfig
In misconfig go to startup
In startup untick windows defender
Then
Report back with results

If you don't want the icon select don't notify me and don't display the icon and look for anything related to windows defender under msconfig.

Unchecking WD from the Startup tab in MSConfig did the job.


If the following is selected:
Don't notify me and don't diplay the icon (not recommended)

Wouldn't that preclude getting notifications from all of the 4 categories of the Vista Security Center?

Perhaps an easier and perhaps better method to access startup items and have better control of them is to download and use WinPatrol http://www.winpatrol.com/ . Besides giving acess and control of startup items it has many other fantastic features.
