virus in restore file

I am running a hp pavilion dv9730 with vista home prem. 32. I need to restore my system but the restore program quits do to a virus in the restore files. As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. Can anyone suggest to me what to do? I could care less about the virus in the restore files, my main goal is to get my cd/dvd drive working again so I can install my business software.

I "think' I caused this problem when I deleted some files. I deleted files I did not think I needed including all the cyberlink folder in program files. Can't remember the others, I also deleted lightscribe.

Hmm, that's what you get when you play around with system files - LOL. But for your initial problem I suggest to send the restore files to an on-line scanner. there are many but this one seems to be very thorough: VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan It may take a little while for the upload, but so what - just have it run in the background. The scan itself is more or less instant.

Hi, rodneydlux. I suspect that any infected restore points that Norton has blocked are could be damaged. Although this KB Article How antivirus software and System Restore work together refers to XP, it states:
During a restoration, an active antivirus program scans for infected files. If the antivirus program detects any infected files, the antivirus program tries to modify, move, or delete the infected files. If the antivirus program successfully cleans the infected files, System Restore restores the cleaned files. However, if the antivirus software cannot clean a file, the antivirus software deletes or quarantines the file. As a result, the restoration does not work because these actions to the file cause an inconsistent restoration state. As a result, System Restore reverts to the state immediately before the restoration.{bold added}

Note that KB Article also includes:

To restore a computer to a previously infected restore point, disable the associated antivirus program, and after the restoration is complete, re-enable the antivirus program to detect and to take action on the restored state to remove any infected files.

Before you disable your antivirus, disconnect the computer from any network to help prevent the infection of other computers.

After you re-enable your antivirus, you will need to reclean the computer as you will have restored the infection as well.
