Help with Vista 32bit malware/virus problem?

I have a pretty big problem although it seems to be fixable with the proper guidance. If there is anyone out there that can help me, it'd be much appreciated. Here's the history:

- DCOM service process launcher stopped working unexpectedly, plug and play launcher stopped working unexpectedly, Windows host process errors all have shown up at random times. I have been able to work on the computer for several hours without it restarting before so there has been no real pattern to this.

- I have run MalwareBytes twice before, full scan seen below, but nothing could be found after the initial run yielded several infected files and some quarantined registry files.

- It now looks on my desktop like I have a couple viruses in the form of two odd desktop.ini files (which I haven't touched) and a fake Norton Anti-Virus Scan.

- Nothing has affected performance yet and I can browse, I can play games, but it seems like more stuff keeps piling up.

- When it automatically restarts (only because of the DCOM problem now, I was told I could change the processes on the PLug and Play), Windows loads, goes to black, and then comes right back up again. Might just be a normal thing that I hadn't noticed before but it seemed odd to me. I have the HJT log below and the two Malware Bytes scans dated two days apart.

ANY HELP WOULD BE AMAZING!

Did you also run an A/v like Microsoft Security Essentials. It may pick up virus that Malwarebytes did not.

No not yet. I tried but it did it's restart, DCOM thing on me. I will do that now. How do I stop the restart in Vista?

EDIT: I wasn't able to do Msft Security Essentials because I have Live One Care running. Should I shut that off?

Yes shut it down. We need something more than Malwarebytes. This could be a virus and if it is, we cannot do anything until it is gone.

One indication of a virus is the inablity to check for it, which seems to be your situation. They do everything possible to survive. Including not being able to visit sites that can help remove them.

I am sorry but should I be deleting OneCare? It's not exactly letting me shut it down to install Security Essentials.

I do not want to give you a definitive yes, but I would. You have to do everything possible to make sure you do not have a virus. If you have the DVD or you can reinstall one care, there is no problem.

MSE is a very good A/V. when you are up and working again, you may want to use that in conjunction with Malwarebytes.

Other than a couple of missing toolbar entries, HijackThis is not showing any signs of infection -- although it is pretty useless with today's malware anyway.

However, I did notice C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\ssv.dll which makes your computer highly vulnerable to the Vundo infection. I suggest you go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall ALL entries for Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE and Java(TM). Then run JavaRa to remove the leftovers: Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.


  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program. (Windows Vista users Right-click JavaRa.exe > Select Run as Administrator)
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older versions of Java.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.


Then download and install Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18.

Note: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software options presented with the update. They are not part of the software update and are completely optional.

I suspect you have other vulnerable software on your computer as well and advise Secunia Software Inspector.
